Mir from Kashmir

Mir, the visiting artisan that brings hand embroidered shawls and hand painted papier mâché from Kashmir will be on hand this Friday and on First Friday (8/2). The handicrafts that he brings are of the highest quality, that you would not be likely to find even if you went to India.

Kashmir is in the north, in the Himalayan part of India. In a country of a billion people, 7 million people work in the handicrafts economy. The skills are taught, the work is done by adults of all ages and ability. The greater job security in handicrafts, than in the tech industry, allows family to send their children to school. Handicrafts might supplement income from other sources or be the sole source of income for a family.

I brought a few things back from the Bazaar

Things from the Bazaar

Like this Huichol bear. Wooden sculptures covered with small colored beads imbedded in wax made by the Wixarika (Huichol) People.

Magic lanterns that are oil or incense burners, hand forged Damask blade knives with beautiful wood handles, Mayan and Aztek inspired necklaces.

Peace,
