Findley Lake Beautifies Downtown with Whiskey and Wine Barrel Planters

In a charming blend of community spirit and aesthetic enhancement, Findley Lake has launched a village beautification initiative that repurposes old whiskey and wine barrels into vibrant seasonal planters. This project, spearheaded by Findley Lake Forward with support from the Findley Lake Community Foundation, aims to spruce up the downtown area and boost local enjoyment and pride.

These hefty barrels, once housing Mazza Winery's finest bourbon and wines, are currently being prepped for their new role at Stan’s Greenhouse. The transition from barrel to bloomer involves substantial effort, as noted by local volunteers Tom Ayers and Bill Simpkins, who have been instrumental in handling the barrels, each weighing over 100 pounds. Their dedication ensures that, once the warm weather settles in, these barrels will be ready to host a rotating display of plants, adding a splash of color to the village streets.

The initial plans for the barrels feature an array of seasonal florals throughout the year—from mums in the fall to poinsettias during the Christmas season. Findley Lake Landscaping, under the guidance of Scott Porter and Chrissy Briggs, has generously offered space to store the barrels during the off-season months, ensuring the displays remain a mainstay in the village’s visual appeal.

“This is the type of initiative that brings our community together,” stated Jeff Stohr, Findley Lake resident and Chair of the Findley Lake Community Foundation. “In one instance, you have multiple organizations and countless volunteers working together to beautify our community with a tangible project that marries the old with the new. And this is just the tip of iceberg with that the Community Foundation has planned. Stay tuned for more exciting information in the coming weeks.”

Local businesses have shown commendable support, both financially and physically, contributing to the project's realization. This collaboration underscores a broader community commitment to not only enhance the village's beauty but also to prepare for larger transformational projects aimed at improving the local infrastructure.

Maintaining these floral displays will be a community effort, and Findley Lake Forward is eager for volunteers to step forward. Those interested in contributing to this beautification endeavor are encouraged to contact Our Own Candle Company at 716-769-5000 to get involved.

As these whiskey and wine barrels transition from aging spirits to nurturing blooms, they symbolize a community rejuvenated and united in its effort to create a more welcoming and beautiful Findley Lake for residents and visitors alike.

DRAFTS & CRAFTS INFO HERE

The Tapestry would like to introduce you to author Destiny Kinal. Destiny will be writing a column for The Tapestry. Destiny lives part of the year on her famly homestead outside of Findley Lake and the other part in the San Francisco Bay area. Her most recent work The Textile Trilogy of novels tells the true story of how our suffragist foremothers were influenced by their Seneca and Haudenosaunee neighbors, a matrilineal way-of-life where men and women have always shared power. You can reach Destiny at destinykin22@gmail.com. Photo of Destiny Kinal and Judy Noble collaborators on Findley Lake history.

Meandering, Foraging, and

Daydreaming the Past into the Present

Written for The Tapestry by Destiny Kinal

Meandering

Is there anyone out there who does not appreciate a meandering stream?

Lots of variables create a meander pattern: soil composition, rocks, grade.

Having been a watershed buff since the mid-70’s, I know--as do many of you, dear readers—that meandering is governed by mathematical principles defined within each stream. These are not random as anyone can observe.

And so, dear readers, I will consider my own meanderings as purposeful.  If I find them worth communicating, I will.

Foraging

Chautauqua County and Mina Township with its high percent of wetlands has always been rich for foragers.  Foraging is harvesting wild seasonal things that no one claims and that one is welcome to gather.

Robin Wall Kimmerer, an author and professor in Syracuse New York is also a member of the Potawatamie Nation.  Her international best seller Braiding Sweet Grass spells out the Honorable Harvest for us, how not to take everything you can, to leave some for others and the wild birds and animals.

I recently heard that the wild leeks are dwindling, perhaps endangered.

We thought that our bullfrogs were disappearing but this spring, they returned, as my brother Lance said, “with a vengeance.”

My point of view on Mother Nature is she is an expert in restoration.  Once the insult is removed, she returns, glorious and abundant as ever.  I plan to report on my foraging.  Please write in when you have something to report.

Daydreaming

Daydreaming is essential for artists and writers.  And perhaps equally important for every human being.   A walk alone in nature allows the mind to quiet, the whole being to observe, without analysis. That’s when the quiet accrual of random facts can occur, the raw material of inductive reasoning.

You notice that the milkweed flowers are blooming. You stop to have a snootful and swoon at their astonishing fragrance.  You notice little white waxy things along the stem and think perhaps they are eggs.  Further down the stem, you notice little worms!

You think, “it’s working, the return of the monarchs, back from the brink of extinction.”

You make a note to return during periodic episodes during the summer.  Perhaps you will see monarchs.  When you do return, you remember what fun it is to blow the milkweed seeds from the cracked open pods.  As they sail away, little aerodynamic umbrella seedlings, you admire nature’s perfection.

Her ability to restore, even what is broken.
