Chico State students win NPCA Design Competition
Several Chico State students attended the NPCA's The Precast Show 2019 in Louisville, KY, where they competed in the first ever NPCA Design Competition. The students were given a real-world project that had originally been specified as cast-in-place and were challenged to convert the project to precast. The teams needed to consider all of the production, operational, safety, cost and logistical facets of the project. The judges selected Chico’s team as the winner. As the winning team, Chico received $2,000 for the students and a $5,000 donation to their school program. To find out more, watch this video!
Chico State celebrates student leaders
Fourteen Chico State students were recently honored with Student Leadership awards, recognizing their exceptional service, achievement and mentorship. One of the students honored with the President's Academic Excellence Award, was CIM student Damien Bonis.

According to CIM program coordinator Feraidon Ataie, “Damien is an outstanding student. While maintaining a strong GPA, he has been active in community service projects with Chico’s Sierra View Elementary School and Inspire High School, as well as in CIM research projects. He is indeed a role model for other Chico State students.”

MTSU CIM students study abroad in England
The School of Concrete and Construction traveled, for the fourth time to Constructionarium, the National Construction College in Bircham Newton, England. Twelve CIM and three Construction Management majors traveled with Mr. Jon Huddleston and Dr. Marcus Knight, CIM faculty. Students flew into London, toured the sights and traveled into the country to Bircham Newton. There, the students were divided into job functions, given titles, live in dorms and work from sunup to sundown for five days to complete a scaled-down replica of an actual structure in England. This year the group completed the Brewery Wharf Footbridge while making friends and memories with their peers.
Spring Internship Day
Due to the overwhelming number of employers asking about full-time graduates, the CCM Internship Speed Interviewing Day needed a whole day to assist 18 employers and 42 students for six-minute interviews each. New in 2019, we added an afternoon of “slow, scheduled interviews” in which seniors were able to schedule interviews in advance with any of 21 employers to talk about opportunities.
CIM Patron's spring meeting and Jim Speakman Memorial Golf Tournament
This year, CIM was determined to grow our largest annual fundraiser and made the annual golf tournament only for CIM affiliated companies with the focus on employers of alumni. Now able to see past the building seed money, the goal was to make adjustments to the tournament that would result in sustainable annual funds with a focus on scholarships.

The Patron’s group heard the call and had the most successful tournament ever with $108,140 raised! Price increases for a foursome, a record number of teams registered (54 total teams) and a few cuts to costs helped to make this year a new baseline for fundraising annually. Patrons' plan to take a similar strategy with their fall efforts and voted to double the capacity of the fall Skeet Shoot to allow for growth.

On the road with Texas State CIM

Recognizing CIM Founding Father, Ward Poston
Ward Poston is considered one of three founding fathers of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program. The story goes that back in 1994, three material salesmen in Tennessee saw a problem after being asked to guest lecture to a class about concrete. Who was going to move into their roles in the future and be the next generation of salesmen, managers and leaders the concrete industry? Ward was not only part of that trio that planted the seed to grow CIM, he and others worked hand in hand with industry and the state of Tennessee to develop the curriculum and courses.

In the 20 years since, Ward has promoted the program wholeheartedly and has been a critical piece in the success of CIM and within the university, community and industry. Ward has helped guide the MTSU CIM Patron’s group, providing the history and perspective of a 30-year seasoned professional to many along the way. He is intimately involved with the program and Patron's group, attending meetings, events and always present to interact with students.
To recognize his dedication to our program, MTSU CIM brought Ward to Las Vegas during World of Concrete to honor him, along with the National Steering Committee. Chris Davenport, CIM class of 2000 and President of Southern Concrete Machinery, spoke with the group about the impact that Ward’s friendship and guidance has had on him, as a person and professional. MTSU and NSC give a special thanks to Ward
for all he has done to promote and grow our program locally
and nationally.
