Building Awareness With "Leave Your Legacy"

"Leave Your Legacy" is a campaign created by the National Steering Committee (NSC) marketing committee to educate current employees in the concrete industry about the benefits of the CIM program and the value of it as a career choice for their family members and colleagues. To spread the word about the value of the CIM program, we are looking for advocates who are passionate about CIM and willing to share their positive experiences with others. Advocates will be armed with key messages as well as resources created by the NSC Marketing Committee and include flyers, infographics, videos, social media graphics and content and driver room posters. Are you interested in being one of our first advocates? Reach out to Brian Gallagher or Amy Numbers today!

CIM Student First to Participate in Unique Internship Program

A career in concrete can take you many places - even to a skatepark! Meet Chico State CIM student Paul James (PJ). His summer internship took him to Lenexa, KS where he is working with some of the best skatepark designers in the world, New Line Skateparks. While he received plenty of hands-on experience, his internship curriculum included touring an aggregate quarry, cement operations, ready mix plant and even a meeting with the city officials about permitting and inspections. New Line was so impressed with PJ that they offered him a permanent position with their company! Congratulations PJ!

“The internship was a collaboration between Skate4Concrete, CIM Chico, New Line Skateparks and the Concrete Promotional Group of Greater Kansas City,” said Crystal Howard, Executive Director. “The internship is designed to grow awareness of concrete careers among the skate community and moving forward, we will definitely be offering similar internships to other CIM students.”

Chico State Infographic Tells the CIM Story

The adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the belief that many ideas can be expressed through a single image, which does so more effectively than a simple spoken description. Chico State CIM definitely hit the mark by telling the CIM story in this simple infographic. Well done!

This summer, Luiggi Berzosa had the opportunity to be a project engineer intern at Structural, working with the Industrial Rope Access team in the New York Building Envelope Repair and Facade Restoration division. According to John, he was responsible for four large jobsites which are the biggest group of projects in the entire branch. "My responsibilities included working with suppliers and purchasing materials, getting quotes and finding cost-effective solutions, ordering/returning/ keeping all equipment up-to-date, and production tracking just to name a few," said John. "This internship has kept me extremely busy, but with my construction knowledge and my CIM education at NJIT, I can gladly say that I'm handling things well and learning very quickly."

Our Program is Growing

After an extensive search, the South Dakota State University (SDSU) CIM program is pleased to announce the addition of Jennifer Heller as its new assistant program director. While Jen’s primary goal will be increasing enrollment, she will also assist with promotional activities, student travel and possibly teach a class or two in the future.

Jen brings a lifetime of construction industry experience, along with incredible energy and experience in corporate recruiting, marketing, social media and digital promotions. She is a tremendous addition to our team and we are thrilled to have her on board.

CIM Students Continue Learning During Summer Break

SDSU CIM students understand the importance of pairing their hands-on learning and classroom coursework with industry experience through summer internships. Across the various Patron companies participating this summer, most of the students started out in quality control, testing and working with customers to ensure their project is receiving concrete within tolerance and the customer service they deserve.

As they gain experience running job sites and building relationships, they are also job shadowing to learn about various roles in those companies so they can determine their best career path in the industry. From quality control and customer relations, to estimating and sales, to batching and managing plants these students are learning, growing, and on-track to becoming the experts the concrete industry needs for the future.

Special thanks to our CIM student summer industry experience companies: Lyman Richie Corp., DeGroot Concrete & Construction, Ace Ready Mix/L.G. Everist, Geotek, Knife River, Cemcast, and GCC.

Stay tuned! In the next edition of the CIM eNews, we will release an exclusive video highlighting our CIM students and their supervisors discussing the details of their experiences!
