NYC Small Business Owner of the Month:
MICHAEL JARVELA
founder of
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
- 25 years.
WHAT'S YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD AND WHY?
-Chelsea, cause it's my neighborhood, there's lots of kids, families, friends, and I like the close proximity to the high line, the galleries, the westside bike path, and the lower key shopping on 10th ave beginning with Story, and Steven Alan down to the meatpacking district.
HOW AND WHEN DID FRANK & LU GET ITS START?
-
The idea started when I realized my 2 year old son couldn't get his tee shirts over his head unless the tees were huge. I couldn't find a lightweight finer yarn tee for kids, and if I could find one they were usually crazy expensive designer duds. I formally started Frank & Lu in 2011 and tried to build every piece through the filter of being comfortable for a kid, I used softer, finer, lighter weight yarns for knits and sweaters and for the wovens I wanted them all to have a tad bit of stretch, even the outerwear which is not common.
DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY'S IDEOLOGY.
-
If my fussy kids won't wear it, then it's not comfortable enough.
And the designs should be something a stylish mom or dad would want in their own size.
WHAT'S YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE PRODUCT?
-The Frank & Lu reflective parka, it's super cool.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR FRANK & LU?
-We want to start doing some accessories, like knit caps, neck warmers, leg warmers, arm warmers etc. Mostly because scarfs are a pain, and my daughter insists on sleeveless tops and skirts or dresses in the winter, so accessories like an arm warmer or neck warmer that looks cool might get a lot of use around our house.
WHAT ARE THE GREATEST CHALLENGES AND REWARDS OF BEING A SMALL BUSINESS
OWNER IN NYC?
-The challenges are trying to stand out in a place where there is such an amazing variety of everything to choose from. The reward is similar in that you're in the middle of it all and it's much easier to source what you need to make a clothing line.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE NYC BASED CHARITY OR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, AND
WHY?
-Public school, specifically PS11. It takes a village, and we have a great village that takes care of our school.
IF YOU HAD ONLY ONE DAY LEFT IN NYC, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT?
-My wife and I always lament that New York has ruined us because there's so much good food and such a variety that we'll never be totally happy living anywhere else, and she's right, so I'd spend the last day in a variety of amazing restaurants eating.
