"Do unto others as you'd like them to do to you." The Golden Rule. This is the focus of part 2 of our "Simple Church" sermon series.
Last week Pastor Chelsea focused on the Great Commandment of Jesus who reminded us of the call to love God with everything we have, but also to love our neighbors as ourselves, caring for those whom the world so often overlooks. This week as we reflect upon living out the Golden Rule, which is very closely related to Jesus' command.
The world seems to live more as those who do unto others BEFORE they do something to us, but that's not what Jesus says. This call to do and love is a call to humility, seeking the betterment of the other, and being willing to take the extra time and effort to try to make the lives of those around us better than it would be had they not had an interaction with us.
Early Sunday morning our Senior High Youth will head out on their summer mission trip to Camp Dogwood through the Carolina Cross Connection ministry. They go as representatives of FUMC, doing unto those who need to experience God's love and home repairs. They will be tangibly living out the Golden Rule.
This past Wednesday night, over 15 members of our congregation, most of whom spoke publicly, showed up before the Fredericksburg Planning Commission to ask for a rezoning of property for the proposed Jeremiah Project housing and assistance for our unhoused neighbors. They were living out the Golden Rule.
Though these might seem bigger examples, every day, we have the opportunity to live out the Golden Rule in simple and sometimes complex ways. As we God the world catches a glimpse of the Grace, Hope, and Love that Jesus shares with the world.
Sunday, I invite you to come to worship, prepared to receive some word of encouragement that might help us all embody and live out the Golden Rule more and more readily, because the more we do, the more the world is change to reveal God's glory.
See you then! Pastor Tim
( Please note: Pastor Tim will be on vacation for the next 3 weeks after Sunday worship, and will resume his Thursday table talk at Agora Coffee shop on August 8th.)
