The Sheriffs’ Association has obtained 36,000 medical-grade masks for distribution to requesting Sheriff’s Offices across New York. The masks were manufactured for the Ford Motor Company’s Charitable Fund and made available by the Fund at no cost to at-risk populations, including police and other first responders.
An initial supply was directed to the Sheriffs’ Association by DMV Assistant Commissioner Chuck DeWeese at the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, and our GTSC Law Enforcement Liaison, Tony D'Agostino, was able to secure another large batch directly from the Ford Fund. Tony has been shipping masks to Sheriffs who have requested them, and has more on hand for Sheriffs to use in their own agencies or to distribute to organizations in need within their counties.

Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Makes 10,000 Masks for Inmates, Corrections Staff and Public
|
|
An Important Goal — Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr., marks the manufacture of the 10,000th mask by inmates at the County Correctional Facilities.
|
|
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office recently celebrated reaching the milestone of 10,000 masks produced by Suffolk jail inmates for use in the jail and for public distribution. Early in the pandemic, correction officers devised a plan to engage county inmates in a sewing program to make cloth masks. The Sheriff’s Office received donations of cloth and materials from the community and inmates enthusiastically took on the job of sewing the masks. Working together, the inmates, Sheriff’s staff and the community got the job done.
This initiative has helped supply the jail with much-needed PPE and aided in reducing transmission of the virus among staff and inmates. It has also been an opportunity for inmates to give back to the community and has been a morale-booster for both inmates and staff at the Suffolk facilities.

Coming Attractions: Videos by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office
|
|
The series is designed to acquaint residents with all Divisions of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office: Law Enforcement, Corrections, Civil and the 911 Center (through a shared supervision agreement with Delaware County Emergency Services). The videos highlight procedures, training, and special programs in each Division.
Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond initiated the production of the video series in 2019, but completion was delayed by the advent of COVID and resultant safety concerns. This initial video is a short history about the role of the Sheriff’s Office in the United States. Subsequent videos in the series are now in production and will be released as they are completed.
Sheriff DuMond noted, "We feel it is important to inform our residents of the many responsibilities the Sheriff’s Office is tasked with, and how we prepare ourselves to be good community servants … and to foster more transparency in our community."

Saratoga County Sheriff's Office Recognizes Staff for Lifesaving Efforts

Lifesaving Support of a Colleague — Members of the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office, including Sheriff Michael Zurlo, far right, surround the woman (in blue) who they saved from cardiac arrest while on duty at the County's 911 Center.

Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo recognized three members of the Communications Division with Life Saving awards for their roles in the reversal of a cardiac arrest of a fellow telecommunicator. Additionally, six members of the Division were awarded Certificates of Merit, for their roles during the medical emergency which occurred within the 911 center.
In September, a telecommunicator working in the Communications Center experienced cardiac arrest. Relying upon the training and teamwork skills they use every day, nearby staff initiated CPR until relieved by paramedics.
Sheriff Zurlo noted, “The calmness demonstrated by these members during this event is amazing. To have an event as tragic as this happen in a working high-volume 911 Center is a testament to their professionalism and dedication.”
Presented with the agency’s Life Saving Award were Desk Sergeant Kurt Haas, Desk Officer Thomas Lundquist and Director Steven Gordon. Certificates of Merit were given to Desk Sergeant Leah Kane, Desk Sergeant Timothy Johnston, Desk Officer George Downs, Desk Officer Niklas Kaplan, Desk Officer Joshua Otten and Desk Officer William Cody Marshall.

Tompkins County Sheriff's Office Featured in NFL Commercial
|
|
Residents of Tompkins County should look for a familiar face during Sunday Night Football as Sheriff Derek Osborne and members of his staff make a cameo appearance advertising their work with national nonprofit organization the Vera Justice Institute. The Sheriff and his staff have worked closely with the Vera Institute for Justice to drive change and to urgently build and improve justice systems that ensure fairness, promote safety, and strengthen communities.
"I have found those working with Vera to share the same compassion as my office towards examining racial equity and disparity, especially in the area of incarceration," Sheriff Osborne said. "We have enjoyed many respectful conversations both in-person and by video chat. We have given them access to our jail data and look forward to working together with them further to examine the results of their study."
The commercial, which is being aired nationwide on CBS, NBC, FOX and ESPN, can be viewed anytime online. It shows a May 2019 meeting between the Sheriff's Office and the Vera Institute, during which former NY Giant's team members Antoine Bethea and Michael Thomas visited the Office to learn more about the work being done by the Vera Institute and its local law-enforcement partners.
The collaboration among the NFL, the Vera Institute and local law-enforcement offices is part of a national campaign by the League, launched last year, to highlight social justice and engage in philanthropy to further work in the sectors of education and economic advancement for marginalized communities, police and community relations and criminal justice reform.
