HISPANIC FEST SATURDAY
AT FULWOOD PARK
La Fiesta del Pueblo, one of t
he largest Hispanic festivals in Georgia, celebrates its 21st year on Saturday at Fulwood Park in Tifton.
Since its beginnings in 1996 in Omega, La Fiesta has been bringing the taste, sound, history, culture and traditions of Latin American countries to Tifton. The free, family-oriented festival is
a day of fun, authentic food, Mariachi music and folklore dances from 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
This year, La Fiesta del Pueblo is in honor of the late Luz Marti of Tifton, who was one of the festival's founders. She dedicated 20 years to this community event.
There are two stages this year: The main stage will have professional dancers, and the Syd Blackmarr stage (south side of the park) will be occupied by singers and music. A street dance featuring a live Radio Rumba from Atlanta will be from 7-10 p.m.
Traditional foods prepared by vendors will be for sale as well as a variety of
arts, crafts and commercial items. The
children's area will include
face painting, crafts, bouncing houses, giant slides, kiddie train rides, bungee jumping and more.
Booths with information about health, education, social services and community organizations will also be located in the festival area.
In
2016, La Fiesta attracted about
12,500 people from
38 Georgia counties and
six surrounding
states.
In 2004, the festival was recognized by the Georgia Council for the Arts as an outstanding recipient of grassroots funding.
Then-Gov.
Sonny Perdue
said, "
La Fiesta
showed how
arts
can
change lives
and be used as a
tool
to
strengthen
Georgia
communities

A fight among several students Tuesday morning inside Tift County High School seriously injured a Tifton police officer and resulted in eight arrests.
Jody Abad, public safety officer assigned to Tift County High, had gotten in the middle of the fight to break it up and fell to the floor with a couple of students as the students were pummeling one other.

Tifton Police Chief Buddy Dowdy could not say the extent of Abad's injuries, but there are several reports that the officer detached his bicep in one arm, injured his other arm and cracked a kneecap.
"An
altercation among a few students occurred on our
high school campus before school on
Tuesday," the
Tift County School System said in a written statement.
"The cause of the fight appears to stem from incidents outside of school.
"The safety of our students is always our main concern, and our school was never on lockdown. Our school resource officer and school staff handled the incident quickly and efficiently. All students involved in the fight have been disciplined according to our Code of Conduct. Any further charges and punishments are part of an investigation by local law enforcement officials," the school system said.
Chief Dowdy said the arrests included juveniles and an adult. Some students at the high school claim the fight was gang-related.
"I have heard that," the police chief said Thursday. "That has not been confirmed, as far as I know."

'TOPPING OUT' MARKS HALFWAY POINT FOR
$22 MILLION MUSCULOSKELETAL CENTER
Tift Regional Health System (TRHS) and
Cauthan Construction Co. held a
"topping-out party" Sept. 21 at the
Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC)
West Campus in Tifton.
The event marked the halfway point of construction for a $22-million musculoskeletal center. "Topping out" refers to the roof being completed on the building under construction. Lunch and tours were offered to hospital board members, executive leaders, physicians, architects and contractors.
"This new, state-of-the-art building will
consolidate outpatient orthopedic, rheumatology, neurology, pain management, chiropractic and rehabilitation services into a single facility," said
Claire Byrnes, TRHS senior vice president, ambulatory services. "It will provide patients a convenient, one-stop shop for
musculoskeletal services."
Byrnes said
construction is scheduled to be completed in
six months. "Today's celebration recognizes the halfway point of construction," she said. "It signifies that this project has gone from a concept-on-paper to something that is truly tangible. Our goal is be completely moved into the new facility by
May 2018."
The TRMC West Campus is at the crossroads of
U.S. Highway 41 and
Interstate 75 in
Tifton. The musculoskeletal center is a three-story,
80,000-square-foot medical office building on
11.53 acres next to to the
Affinity Clinic building, which houses Tift Regional's multi-specialty physician practice, convenient care clinic and diagnostic services.
The
Hospital Authority of Tift County secured low-interest financing for the new project through the
U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural development program.
