Staff Side Project: Auckland anthems |
|
|
Making records in a music city |
|
Studio Director Rick Imus recently set a record in the Australian Baseball League by performing 12 anthems in a four game series in New Zealand. Geelong-Korea, a team of Koreans, based in Geelong, Australia, travelled to Auckland for a four game series in early January. The anthems for Korea, Australia and New Zealand were performed at each game by Imus in a chord-melody style on electric guitar.
Sky Sport announcer Mark Watson, whose resume includes covering the Olympics, said they were, "very good renditions."
The games were televised and streamed worldwide from North Harbour Stadium - a 20,000 seat venue that also hosts rugby matches for the famous New Zealand All Blacks. Auckland is one of 31 UNESCO Cities of Music worldwide. Click for local radio station's news article and interview.

Tips for the Student Composition Festival
The Studio's 11th Annual
Student Composition Festival runs from Monday, February 10 through Monday, February 24. Regular lesson schedule applies. Here are five tips to help your composition get selected to be performed at our New Music Concert on Sunday, April 5 (A re-issue from our archives):
5. Ask your private lesson teacher for input in selecting a category and notating your ideas.
4. Review scales, chord progressions and rhythmic patterns. Ted Reed's book,
Syncopation, by the way, is wonderful for all instruments.
3. Focus on keeping it simple. Strong melodies consist mostly of step-wise motion and restated phrases.
2. Be prepared to edit your work. A good writer knows how to use the erasing end of the pencil as well as the writing end. Notate your initial ideas in whatever form is handy - you can express it to standard notation later.
1. Perform it to improve it, then rehearse it to perform it for others.
