Fernando Garcia, Executive Director of the BNHR Recognized as a Salzburg Global Fellow, Centers Border Voices and Perspectives at the 2023 Salzburg Global Seminar American Studies Program

EL PASO, Texas – The Salzburg Global Seminar, since 1947, has brought together over 38,000 people from over 170 countries to exchange ideas and practices. This program allows changemakers from different sectors and career stages to expand their knowledge, connections, and ideas and be part of a global network. The Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) is thrilled to highlight that Executive Director and Founder Fernando Garcia was among the selected few individuals who participated in the 2023 Salzburg Global Seminar American Studies Program held in Salzburg, Austria, from September 19 to September 23.

“As we approach our 25th anniversary, a historic milestone for the BNHR, I express my appreciation to the Salzburg Global Seminar for the opportunity to be part of this network and to continue elevating the voices of our border and immigrant communities. As the executive director, my most prominent and most important role is to bridge the voices of our community members with those directly in charge of enacting change in policy and practice. Through this experience, the work, advocacy, and vision of the BNHR has now taken a cross-continental stage.

As our nation continues to experience this humanitarian crisis, we must continue to center the voices, concerns, and experiences of communities of color at the forefront of the advocacy and protection of human and civil rights. This experience was a clear reminder that a better world is possible together. A world that follows the fundamental principle that every human being is equal in dignity and rights” remarked Fernando Garcia.

Fernando Garcia is now a Salzburg Global Fellow, an honor formerly granted to the late Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O’Connor and Stephen Breyer and former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. The BNHR Community Council and Staff congratulates Fernando on this milestone and applauds his tireless advocacy for border, immigrant, and communities of color.
