Adopt a Shelter Pet Month in Licking County Newark Advocate Media/Gannett Foundation Team up to Help Local Animals in Need
Newark Advocate Media/Gannett Foundation recently awarded a grant to the Licking County Humane Society to help make a difference during "Adopt a Shelter Pet Month." A portion of the grant will be used to cover adoption fees for animals who have been waiting at the Humane Society's Thornwood Drive shelter.
"This donation will make a difference for those animals who wait the longest in the shelter environment, said Humane Society Executive Director Lori Carlson. We are so grateful for this support to find permanent, loving homes for these needy animals."
During the week of October 18th-24th, an approved applicant can adopt a fully-vetted cat for free and an adult dog over 6 months of age for $25.00. Kittens will also be free but will require a refundable $50 spay/neuter deposit which is refunded once the adopter follows through with the spay/neuter appointment. All applicants must complete an adoption application and be approved to qualify. The event will continue throughout the week until the funding is expended.
Not only has Newark Advocate Media/Gannett Foundation made a financial donation to help with this project, but they are also volunteering to help. Advocate employees will aid at the shelter
Oct. 24 during "Make a Difference Day." They will assist staff with cleaning and dog walking activities. They also plan to assemble cold-weather shelters for the feral cat population and fill holes in the dog play yards with dirt & gravel. "They are making a heartfelt difference in our community," said Carlson.
"We know our readers are strong supporters of the Humane Society and always respond positively to stories about animals in need," said Advocate Executive Editor Michael Shearer. "We thought this would be a great way to further assist the community for this year's Make A Difference Day."

Help a Community Cat Stay Warm this Winter Oct 16th is National Feral Cat Day
October 16th is National Feral Cat Day and our Community Cats program is happy to take part in this national campaign to raise awareness about the feral and stray cats in our county. This year we will be building winter cat shelters for cat caretakers that are feeding and sheltering outside cats in their community. We need your help gathering supplies to make these much needed shelters.
We need plastic totes sizes 32-35 gallon (latching with lids and dark colored), 18-22 gallon totes, large Styrofoam containers (2'x3' and larger), foam insulation sheets and straw. Our friends at the Newark Advocate Media/Gannett Foundation are donating their time to build the cat shelters for us! We are also in need of large bags of cat food and cash donations to cover the cost of spay/neuter for feral and stray cats donate at http://www.lchspets.org/support/community-cats/ We are collecting supplies through October 23 with distribution to be announced soon! You can drop off all supplies at the Licking County Humane Society 825 Thornwood Drive Heath, OH 43056.

If You Can't Adopt ... Sponsor A Pet!
We are doing our best to keep up with our community cat needs, but our shelter is filled with both cats and kittens looking for forever homes.
If you can't adopt consider sponsoring their care. For as little as $10 a month, sponsorship helps provide food,
healthcare, and a safe environment for the cat or dog of your choice. In addition, sponsorship donations can be used to lower adoption fees on our harder to adopt animals. Sponsors will receive a picture and a message from their sponsored pet. The sponsor's name will be prominently displayed on the door of the animal's quarters. Sponsorships make purrrrfect gifts for animal lovers who already have pets or for someone who can't have one. They are also a great way to honor a the memory of your beloved pet. Sponsor A Pet Today!
