"We take God seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously."
A church I served immediately after Seminary had this as a part of their mission statement. It has continued to ring true for me, which is why you might catch me wearing a shark fin or grass skirt from time to time.
(Side This church is the same one from whom we borrowed the idea to read the mission statement each week in worship.
Life can be very serious, stressful, and anxiety-producing. Where can we go to unwind and enjoy each other's company, perhaps sharing a few laughs in the process? I hope the answer is with your faith family - who doesn't love a good laugh! I think God has a good sense of humor - after all, look at giraffes' necks and a platypus bill!
This Sunday, we will continue with "The Great Church Chill Out" and focus on "laughing out loud". You are encouraged to bring a joke with you to worship - or you can always text or email me one as well!
If you're not going away this weekend as Guilford County Schools call it a wrap for the 2023-2024 school year, I hope to see you in worship this Sunday. If you are traveling, I pray traveling mercies on each of you. And remember: we're as close as your phone, tablet, or laptop for worship each Sunday - more information about that is below. If you're here this weekend, I hope to see you, in person, at the church!
