Our community recently came together for two important events in Jewish history.

At Temple B'nai Tikvah, we solemnly commemorated Yom HaZikaron, honoring the sacrifices of IDF soldiers and victims of terror. We also honoured the 132 hostages abducted into Gaza, praying for their safe return.

A few days later at the Paperny Family JCC, we celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut, marking Israel's 76th Independence Day. With over 250 community members and allies, we immersed ourselves in engaging programs and Israeli-inspired cuisine, reaffirming our commitment to Israel's contributions to the world and its pursuit of peace.

These gatherings showcased our Jewish community's strength and unity, echoing the spirit of Am Israel Chai—may Israel continue to thrive for generations.

To commemorate Yom Ha'Atzmaut and honour the enduring bond between Israel and Canada, the flag of Israel proudly waved at Calgary City Hall. The Consulate of Israel in Toronto and Western Canada partnered with us to have the flag raised, so we could acknowledge 3,000 years of rich history and 76 years of remarkable innovation publicly in Calgary.

Earlier this week, a special concert was held featuring the Violins of Hope, a collection of instruments that survived the Holocaust, played by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Attendees had the opportunity for a pre-concert meet and greet with Avshi Weinstein, curator of the restored instruments. As the concert unfolded, the incredible melodies of these historic instruments filled the hall, telling stories of both suffering and resilience.

In this unforgettable event, music served as a beacon of resilience and remembrance, uniting us in our shared humanity. Please click here to view upcoming events with Violins of Hope, and make sure to visit the exhibition at Studio Bell, Home of the National Music Centre until June 16.

Join us on Thursday, June 6 for the 33rd annual Paperny Family JCC Sports Dinner presented by ATB Financial. This year's speaker, Bo Jackson, is considered to be one of the greatest athletes of all time – the only one to be named All Star in both MLB (1989) and NFL (1990).

Master of Ceremonies for the event is UCalgary Chancellor Jon Cornish. Call 403-444-3145 or email to purchase tickets.
