Salutations Troop 3!

We had a great trip to Washington DC a couple weeks ago on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend. After driving 3 hours in pouring rain to Camp Snyder, for a moment it appeared we had no place to stay. See the details below, about how we went from having no cabin to what was probably the nicest Scout cabin I have ever stayed in.

It was beautiful winter morning at the National Mall. On our tour of the monuments and memorials, we walked through the MLK Memorial. If you have never seen it, there is a long wall inscribed with various quotes of his. Totally unprompted, as we walked past the quotes, several of the Scouts took turns reading each one aloud. It was really awesome. My personal favorite is below.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Keith Grimes

STEM Challenge

At our first meeting of the new year, we held STEM Challenge building to the tallest structure and the longest bridge using spaghetti and marshmallows. We also distributed our 75th Anniversary commemorative neckerchiefs!

January Trip to Washington, DC

On January 12-14 we headed down to the Washington DC Area for our weekend trip. We camped at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA. We had a terrible drive down Friday night in the pouring rain. When we arrived at camp, there was a snafu with cabin reservation. We were a week early, Camp Staff was gone, and they were booked solid because of an NYLT weekend. Out of fear of having to tell the drivers to turn around and head back home, Mr. Summer worked out an arrangement with NYLT Adult Staff. They very graciously accommodated us in "Carroll's Cottage", what was a huge hunting lodge before there was a Scout camp. Plenty of bunk space up in the lofts. The place was gorgeous, with a big commercial kitchen. What could have been a disaster, ended up working out for the better. Plus, we know what to reserve the next time!

Saturday morning, Troop 3 Alum & Eagle Scout Kyle Hallowell met us at Manassas National Battlefield and lead us on a tremendous guided tour of the events of the First Battle of Bull Run. Saturday afternoon, we headed to the Udvar-Hazy Center checked out an incredible array of planes and spacecraft.

Sunday morning we parked near the Jefferson Memorial and did a 3-mile clockwise loop around the Tidal Basin, including Scouts' Own at the FDR memorial. It was clear and cold morning. Snow was rolling in by the time we got back to the cars.

Thank you Kyle & Mr. Summer!
