February Jeweler of the Month

This February our Jeweler of the Month has a twist, it's actually four locally based jewelers. Our four artists will be here during the trunk show to talk about their jewelry and answer questions you may have, so save the date!  Here is information on three of the artists.

Kristin Ellis

Living in San Antonio, Texas, Kristin found inspiration in the silversmithing style of the American West. She learned how to design, cut and polish gemstones, starting with obsidian, turquoise and agate. In college Kristin began reclaiming metals from found objects - silverware, bowls, scrap metal of various sorts. Early on, she milled or melted down all the metals, so their origins were never seen. Now, some of her work shows the original forms of the objects, like her spoon rings. They give a sense of history to the jewelry, and some of these pieces become family heirlooms. Some are made from heirlooms.

Stephanie Polk

Stephanie Savic Polk is a mid-west artist who received a BFA in Sculpture from Denison University and an MFA in Sculpture from Washington University of St. Louis, MO. Her early work included banging metal on a large scale as well as fashion design consisting of reworked vintage clothing for unusual designs on the runway. More recently she has begun to produce jewelry, a natural progression after working so many years with the human form.  Metal raising and chasing techniques incorporated with fused glass and semi-precious stones, precious metals and copper and silver enameling result in unique and stunning work. The dazzling colors and organic forms combine to become wearable art.

Susan Steger

Susan majored in Fine Arts in college at The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati and has continued her education by focusing on metalsmithing classes at the Cultural Art Center in Columbus, Ohio. Through her association and membership in the Florida Society of Goldsmiths she has attended intense metalsmithing programs during the summer. The classes are held on a campus in the mountains of North Carolina
and feature top artists from around the world.
