ER Prepares for Potential Water Shutoff in Cape Town
Perhaps you've seen recent posts by ER personnel in South Africa, or heard about it in news reports: Cape Town is experiencing an incredible water shortage. The government has stated i t will shut off the water to 4 million people sometime in the next two months - on what its calling "Day Zero." Those people will be directed to 200 or so municipal taps with very limited water available per family.

This severe rationing could create chaos, but ER staff members in South Africa are preparing for the crisis. We continue implementing water-saving measures, stockpiling water and planning strategically. We're hoping for rain, calmness and the ability for  ER, our partners, and especially the poor who live near Cape Town, to have access to water. You can learn more in this news report, and this one.

IT Tender Responds to Extreme Crises in Manila
IT Tender, which serves three impoverished communities in suburban Manila, had a busy year in 2017.

One of those communities, Napacor, was reduced to rubble from a fire. Each of the 50 homes was destroyed in less than an hour. Thankfully, each family escaped with no injuries. However, most lost everything they owned - shelter, food and clothing. IT Tender was able to provide each of these families with extensive relief kits, which included food, cooking utensils, clothing, sleeping mats, blankets, pillows, sandals and more.

Another community, Upper Sucat, was demolished so the land could be developed into a commercial property. Some 100 families were left without a home. Many were able to save their belongings and move out safely before the demolition, but some lost belongings and others lost family businesses, such as sari-sari (variety) stores and farm land.

IT Tender was able to assist these families in finding or building new homes, and with the help of a $2,500 donation from ER, also funded livelihood projects that would help the families move forward with a sustainable income.

Path Project Awarded $375,000 in Grants
Georgia-based Path Project  continues to make a significant impact in mobile home communities it serves in suburban Atlanta and beyond - and its work is being recognized.

The ER partner recently was awarded a three-year grant of $275,000 from the Goizueta Foundation for program expansion into a new mobile home park in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Path Project also was named winner of the 2018 Chick-fil-A Foundation True Inspiration Award, which came with a grant of $100,000. Pictured are Path Project founders Jim and Melinda Hollandsworth. Click here to read more about Path Project's honor from Chick-fil-A.

ER's Fisher Helps Change Youth Lives through Soccer
Gabe Fisher already had made quite an impact since moving to South Africa in 2015. He helped launch ER's office near Cape Town, worked with kids at the ER Dream Centre, made videos, got married and started a family (with ER's Lindsey Wolfe).

Now he's reconnected with a long-time passion, soccer. Gabe was recently "loaned" by ER to Ubuntu Trust, the organization that oversees Cape Town's Ubuntu Football Academy.

For four days a week, Gabe focuses on training the boys in nutrition, physical fitness, soccer drills and life skills. On Fridays he works with the kids at the Dream Centre.

"About fifty percent of the kids in the [Ubuntu] program have no active father," Gabe says. "We're using soccer to reach into their lives. Our vision is raise future leaders of Africa by developing fantastic people who become fantastic leaders."

Boom! Skills Flourish in Quito Men's Program
Men at the Quito Dump are learning building skills to supplement their income and provide for their families.

ER's Pete Emery shares: "Putting the finishing touches on some projects at the Men's Program at the Quito Dump. Really neat to see the guys' skills improving by leaps and bounds."

Dream Centre Enrolls First Graders

Dawn Carnill shares this great photo of the first graders who just enrolled in ER's South Africa Dream Centre after-school program. Through the Dream Centre, these kids have a dramatically better chance to stay in school, keep up with peers and enjoy real life opportunities. Want to help the Dream Centre thrive?
