March Training

About this event

This workshop is being offered through a collaboration by Center for Nonprofit Leadership, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (Santa Barbara/Ventura County Chapter), and Pepperdine University's Nonprofit Leadership Collaborative.

Research shows that governance is enhanced, community connection and responsiveness increased, and the mission of the organization is strengthened when nonprofit organizations and the Boards invest in diversity, equity and inclusion. This involves practices much broader than just building a “representative” Board to guide the organization. It is about cultivating a Board that celebrates differences and seeks to build policies and a culture that draw on the unique insights and lived experiences of all its members.

During this session, participants will:

  • Assess the various types of diversity and what is appropriate for nonprofits
  • Examine the process of creating an ideal Board and the role specific audit tools can play in directing effective Board recruitment
  • Explore a real-world case study review on how to establish, take action, and manage for effective inclusion throughout your organization

Organizational teams are encouraged to attend.

Pending 3 CFRE Credits.

Fostering Future Leaders: Nurturing Talent and Strengthening Organizations through DEI

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a hot topic in the nonprofit world today. But what is the right way to achieve an organization’s DEI goals?

A DEI strategy shouldn’t be just about checking boxes—it should be about tapping into fresh perspectives that fuel creativity and innovation. By embracing a variety of backgrounds and experiences, organizations can break out of stagnant patterns and discover new solutions to complex problems.

Nurturing emerging leaders is like planting seeds for a thriving future. When organizations invest in the growth and development of their young talent, they're not just securing their own future—they're cultivating a generation of leaders who will carry the torch forward, driving positive change for years to come.

This symposium explores strategies for nonprofits to recruit a more diverse workforce, ensuring new staff have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their current roles, and beyond. The content and materials distributed during the event will serve as valuable tools to articulate this case to the leaders and boards of organizations in our community.
