Get Up and Don't Be Afraid

Matthew 17:1-9

February 19, 2023

February 19, 2023 Worship Service

Jesus came to lift up the lowly. In the Gospel of Luke, a first-century portrait of Jesus, we find stories of Jesus’s ministry with ordinary, unexpected people. They weren’t perfect. Many of them were struggling and didn’t have their acts together. Some of them were outsiders or even outlaws. Whoever they were, Jesus brought the good news of God’s kingdom to those who most needed to hear it. That includes you and me. Through Luke’s stories, we find Jesus’s care and compassion for all as he welcomes sinners and outcasts.

This Sunday, we begin this 2023 Lenten worship journey through Luke. Our journey begins with the stories of Elizabeth and Zechariah as well as Simeon and Anna, "very old" people whom God chose and used for God's purposes, as well as the story of Mary, a young person whom God chose and who said, "yes" to God. In Mary's Magnificat we find the theme of Luke's Gospel: "He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones and lifted up the lowly" (Luke 1:52).

Attend Worship: Pastor Jason has encouraged an "A grade" of 90% worship attendance (missing less the 5 Sundays in a year). You can keep up your attendance by joining worship online through our Facebook premiere or our worship online page. Join us in person or online... it will count!

The gospel of Luke paints a compelling picture of Jesus. Luke's unique stories show us Jesus's concern for the lowly, the outcasts, and the picked on and pushed around. Join us for a study of Luke to deepen your faith and strengthen your commitment to Jesus over the season of Lent.

Stewardship/Finance Updates

AN APPEAL: Over a period of three days in January, a toilet in the women's restroom did not stop filling due to a broken flapper, resulting in a water bill of nearly 6 months of usage due in one month. Our utilities for December were about a 1/3rd higher than normal, with January utilities also being similar in cost. Your generous response to offset these expenses would be appreciated.

Special Offering 2023: Mission Moment

"I was living a normal life," eighteen-year-old Dmitry recalled. "I was studying logistics and marketing and playing football. I wanted to be a professional footballer, and had a contract with the Mariupol junior football team." Anna, also 18, is from Donetsk, and had already moved because of the earlier war (2014, when Russia annexed Crimea).
