From the Pastor
Dear Friends,
People often associate anything ‘church’ with an undercurrent of admonishment. Think of the messages we get or expect to get: Worship more often. Sign up for this or that. Believe in this certain way. Give more money and time. Donate items to this or that. Lurking in these messages is the admonishment to do more because whatever we’re doing now is probably not quite enough.
Then there’s encouragement. It says, and it offers, “Glad you’re here (with no preconditions and no boundaries between insiders and outsiders). A comfortable welcome. Easy entrance into things that interest you. Let’s figure out together what faith means. Thank you for being here. Trust and practical informal partnerships between larger community and church. Service done without the agenda of ‘I scratch your back and then you scratch mine.’
I want to thank you for who you are and for what you do--encouraging, welcoming, open, kind, grateful, graciously and effectively generous. You are inherently aware that life changes constantly and are not anxious about that. You are deeply and very naturally connected to each other and to Bayfield and Cornucopia. You are not especially aware of being and doing these things. You instead just do and are these things very naturally. They’re ingrained in who you are individually and together.
Thanks to you ‘church’ means an ongoing gift, and not an unending task.
I started here two years ago with this ancient prayer. I end my time here with the same prayer—as encouragement of who you already are and what you already do so well.
O Lord God. You have called us to ventures of which we cannot see then ending, by paths as yet untrodden and through perils unknown. Give us faith to venture out with good courage, not knowing where we ill go, but only that your hand is holding us and your love supporting us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
You’re wonderful in so many ways! Thank you!
Pastor Will Mowchan

An Update from Alla
The second half of December and the first half of January were a very hectic, nervous, difficult time for our family. And I forgot to send the update to the church newsletter last time. There were the events, that distracted us from ordinary life at that time. People appeared who began to harass our family and insult us based on their nationality; they even went so far as to chase Oleg in a car when he was delivering pizza. For several days the police warned these people to stop; Viktoria did not attend kindergarten for several days due to these events for safety reasons. We were forced to turn to the New Day organization for help, they intervened and notified us that the police had already served a warning letter to these people and that if they continued, it would be a criminal offense. But we are still afraid of a collision with them, since we have no guarantee that this will not happen again. At the moment we are trying to live an ordinary life, but for now Pavel does not allow me to walk with the children alone. This situation reminded us of the events in Russia and revived old wounds. It is very good that in the USA the system of protecting people from attacks is so well and quickly developed. So, regarding usual life, Pavel continues to go about his business, a little about his activities here, here is a direct link: https://sites.google.com/view/from-the-future/home, Oleg finished high school, on February 8th he receives a diploma. Victoria continues to go to Kindergarten, Melissa grows every day, I am involved in development, raising children and home. Have a positive February everyone! Thank you for your support, understanding and patience!

Our Church Members and Friends photo wall is something each of us looks at over time. These photos help us connect with each other, remember names of those that we haven’t seen for a while, and is a way to welcome our new Pastor Connie. Now that our photo display is over 10 years old, we would like it to be updated.
Therefore, we ask you to send in a picture of you. This can be a photo with your family at a recent gathering, on an outing, with your furry friends, or a selfie. If this doesn’t work for you and would like a volunteer to take your picture, please call Dianne Judd at 651-341-9724. We can take your photo after worship on Feb 4 or Feb 11. If you have a photo, send it to Nancy at Bethesda either as Digital to bethesdachurchbayfield@gmail.com or for an actual photo, please mail to Bethesda, PO Box 724, Bayfield, WI 54814. We will scan in your photo and return the original.
We want this up by Easter! So if you can please send this to Nancy by February 14, we can use our time in Lent to make this happen.
Thanks you for being part of our community and participating.

Community Lenten Soup and Bread Lunch with Devotions - Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.
Bayfield Presbyterian Church will be hosting soup and bread lunches during Lent on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. starting on Ash Wednesday (February 14) and running through Holy Week at the end of March. These gatherings will be held in the Bayfield Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall.
Devotions will follow the lunch, starting around 1:00 and finishing up no later than 1:30, using Elizabeth Caldwell’s book “Pause: Spending Lent with the Psalms.” Each week focuses on a different psalm. "Each chapter helps readers to connect an image drawn from that psalm, such as paths, faces, blessing, tables, waiting, thanksgiving, listening, being alone or abandoned, and hands, with their own lives. At the close of each chapter, readers are invited to try a different prayer practice to help them continue to reflect on the theme and psalm each day." Books will be available to participants at no charge.
Bayfield Presbyterian Church is looking for volunteers to provide soup and bread to these lunches and to help set up and clean up. If you can and wish to help, contact the BPC office at BPCoffice.bayfieldpres@gmail.com.
