February 2024 Shark News

A word from Ms. Nicole Goodman, Student Support Coordinator about what Black History Month means to her and to Siembra:

Black History Month is a time of reflection and appreciation of the collective accomplishments of African-Americans both past and present. It should be noted the many societal advancements that have come forth as a result of fighting for equality. With social justice being at the forefront of Siembra’s mission, I urge you to take time this month to learn more about the contributions made by African-Americans.

There’s no better way to continue to add to the momentum of Black History Month than using this time to give back to your community. This can be achieved through volunteering, attending a black history month, writing letters to local and national government officials, and educating ourselves on prominent African-Americans who have helped shape this country.

Here at Siembra, we strive to celebrate diversity and we welcome it. Our students are provided a safe space to express themselves, explore different cultures, and challenge themselves and their communities to make a difference.

“History has shown us that courage can be contagious, and hope can take on a life of its own.”

         -Michelle Obama

We want to extend a warm welcome to our new Student Support Director, Ms. Monica Baldwin. We are honored to have her here and to push our Student Support pillar to the greatest extent!

A word from Ms. Baldwin:

I am a native to the beautiful state of New Mexico, born and raised in Albuquerque. I come from a large family, many with backgrounds dedicated to education. I have one child of my own, and many others that I love like my own. Spending time outdoors; soaking up the sun, adventuring in mountains and near bodies of water, brings me peace. In my spare time I like to travel, bake and do DIY home renovation projects.

While this is my first formal position in education, I have spent many years in healthcare dedicated to serving underserved populations. My mission at Siembra is to provide a safe and caring environment for all students. I understand that for some young people, Siembra may be the only place that they are loved and valued and are free to flourish into their best selves. I'm a firm believer that all it takes is one person to make a difference.

Welcome back, everyone! We are absolutely thrilled to have our students back from Winter Break, and the school is buzzing with energy and excitement. Throughout January, we dedicated our efforts to building strong relationships, immersing ourselves in community experiences, and launching exciting projects.

It's been a month filled with collaboration, creativity, and of course, a lot of fun! We're looking forward to the rest of the academic year and continuing to create an inspiring and engaging learning environment for all. Here's to a fantastic start and many more memorable moments ahead!
