Local Youth Travel to D.C.

Youth Coalition members from CAMP (Cubs Advocating for Mental Health and Prevention) in Sedro-Woolley and B.E. Well in Burlington attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Leadership Forum in Washington DC this January. Participants learned strategies for leading coalitions, engaging with peers, and developing health messaging.

While in the capital, youth also met with U.S. Congressman Rick Larsen and U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell to share their experiences and advocate for Skagit County substance use prevention programs.

National Coalition Academy Graduates

While in D.C., District 304 staff member Jill Sprouse (pictured right) and Burlington Healthy Community Coalition President Tessa McIlraith graduated from the National Coalition Academy (NCA).

NCA is a 12-month intensive training on prevention core competencies and essential processes for highly effective Coalitions.

Way to go Jill and Tessa!

Tips for Feeding Picky Kiddos

It’s common for preschool-age children to be picky about what they will eat. In honor of National Nutrition Month®, our WIC staff offer tips for parents and caregivers experiencing the picky-eating phase of their toddler.

Depending on your child’s stage of development, many parents find that including littles in the meal preparation or shopping experience can improve intake.

  • Ask your preschooler to help pick out fresh fruits and veggies at the store.
  • Try offering choices like “Should we have green beans or salad with dinner?” rather than, "Do you want salad with dinner?"
  • Healthcare and nutrition experts recommend offering the same foods for the whole family. Don’t get into the habit of being a “short-order cook.”
  • It’s helpful to have at least one food choice that your child likes along with a new food.
  • New foods take time to enjoy, so stay positive and try it again another time.
