Featured case study: Kansas Dairy Ingredients
|
Kansas Diary Ingredients, or KDI, is a world leader in manufacturing and marketing ultra-filtered concentrated dairy ingredients found in many products at grocery stores. KDI is committed to protecting the environment and has won awards from the EPA and KDHE for its actions.
For the past five years, PPI has worked with KDI on various projects. In 2022, PPI intern Austyn Smith documented KDI’s pollution prevention successes in a case study that captures one aspect of a circular economy where “waste” is recaptured and used as a resource to manufacture new materials and products. KDI is ensuring some crops grown by their extracted waters are kept within the cycle to feed cows and so on. KDI invested in converting an anaerobic digestor tank into a sequence and batch reactor so crop water can maintain the quality and composition beneficial to crops.

Calling industry partners:
Trash the trash!
This Earth Week, we are challenging industry partners to host a litter pickup event at their facilities. You can limit the event to your own property or expand it to an adjacent field or riverbank. Cleaning litter from the ground, such as in your facility’s parking lots and storage areas, is the easiest way to prevent escaped trash from making it to the oceans. We have put together several helpful tips to help organize this event and reduce escaped trash.

What is environmental justice?
|
According to the EPA, environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. This goal will be achieved when everyone enjoys:
- The same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards, and
- Equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work.
This factsheet from EPA includes information about strategic opportunities for advancing environmental justice, tools and products for environmental justice action, environmental justice integration, direct support, and partnerships and engagement.
