Dear Eva,

You may have heard about our recent visit from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who joined me, our board chair, elected officials, and Family Health Centers of San Diego cancer screeners to share our work on advanced cancer screenings, and to discuss the collaboration between FHCSD and the White House’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative meant to speed up the rate of progress against cancer.

I was incredibly honored to have the First Lady choose FHCSD to visit for this conversation, as we were one of just 11 clinics in the entire country who received grants related to the Cancer Moonshot Initiative. It truly was a testament to FHCSD’s exemplary work in so many areas, and our deep commitment to the original mission of the organization: “Providing caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low-income and medically underserved persons”.

We had the opportunity to share with the First Lady, HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson, Congressman Scott Peters and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs our work on advanced cancer screenings that was made possible in part due to a $500,000 HRSA grant we received last year. FHCSD Patient Navigator Earl Felisme eloquently told his story about losing his twin brother to cancer, and how that experience drove him to pursue a career in advanced cancer screening.

Patient Navigator Elizabeth Cabral and Medical Assistant Jacqueline Cisneros spoke about their passion for the work they do, and what it means to them to be able to work with patients on early detection and treatment, and why they chose to work at FHCSD – because of our mission.

I’m so proud of our FHCSD staff and their ability to communicate the life-changing work they’re doing every day, specifically in advanced cancer screening, talking about the lives they’re able to impact daily and how it makes them feel personally fulfilled in their career.

To many of our staff, this is more than a job. We come to work every day with the mission to provide high-quality patient care to those who need it most, specifically those who cannot access healthcare elsewhere. This was evident in our discussion with the First Lady and other attendees.

We’re incredibly proud to have hosted the First Lady and look forward to our continued partnership with the White House on this and other initiatives.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christopher Gordon

Volunteer Event:

We kicked off a new volunteer initiative called the Good Neighbor Club! It provides opportunities to give back using your time rather than dollars. On Saturday, January 28, our FHCSD Good Neighbor Club volunteer group had a blast and made an impact at its Memorial Park community service event! FHCSD Staff members were joined by community suppers and workers from the City of San Diego to paint over graffiti, pick up trash an renew planter beds.

Our next park clean up event is scheduled later this month, and you are invited to attend! Help us paint park benches, do light landscaping, and remove trash to care for a neighborhood park.
