As we start 2018, we extend a New Year's welcome to three active, enthusiastic new members that can hardly wait to start!

* Annie Matsuwaka and her husband Bob couldn't resist the Waterford glasses while shopping one Saturday. While at the register, they noticed the fun our members have volunteering and wanted to join in. Annie is a certified Food Safety Professional and retired from managing the Food Services at United Airlines as well as bilingual in Cantonese. * Joan Ukishima is a fellow church goer of member volunteer Sharon Ehrhorn. She had donations to give, heard about ALH and wanted to know more about the good that we do in the community. 	Johanna Leiato

* Johanna Leiato has been volunteering at Mary Kay Junk's home with the We Care group that packs layettes, but her hours weren't being counted. Now they will be! She is a retired Bailiff at the District Court and has a lot of interesting stories to tell us...She can be reached at (808) 772-1881 or email: ntjol@yahoo.com.

As the Thrift Shop is our greatest resource for our Philanthropic Programs, we are so happy that they are interested in starting there. Annie and Joan would like to start helping out upstairs while learning more about other ways they can contribute. Johanna will be starting off downstairs with Mary Kay servicing the customers. Please introduce yourselves and welcome them into our ALH Ohana!

Assistance League of Hawaii Regular Meeting 

on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2018 

The February 14, 2018 Assistance League of Hawaii Regular Meeting will be held at the Kirin Restaurant (formerly the Seafood Village) located in the Hyatt Regency Beach Resort and Spa on 2424 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu 96825 starting at 10:30 a.m. The Kirin restaurant is in the hotel basement. There is no elevator though there is a chair-lift.

The cost for the buffet lunch is $16.00 per person. Parking is available in the Hyatt Regency Beach Resort and Spa and will cost: $3.00 for self-parking and $4.00 for valet parking for 4 hours. Please note the directions to the hotel and hotel parking below. The valet desk can direct you to the restaurant.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa is located across the street from the famous Duke Kahanamoku statue on Waikiki Beach. When driving to the hotel, please note that parking is on Uluniu Avenue. 

To get there, please take Kalakaua Avenue to Kaiulani Avenue and take a left. Take a right on Koa Avenue and another right on Uluniu Avenue. Turn right to find valet on the right side of Uluniu Avenue. The self-parking garage is across the street, on the left side of Uluniu Avenue.

The Finance Committee will be holding its meeting on  February 28, 2018 starting at 9:30 am in the 

Ohana Room.

Finance Committee Member Volunteers include: Margie Van Swearingen - Chairman, Ellen Wilson- Vice Chairman, Coni Holland, Sandy Wells, Sharon Ehrhorn, Dot Mason, Cathy Young, Miho Teipel, Laurelyn Berger, Betty Parinas, LaVonne Holmberg, Jane Winslow, Ronnie Wassill, and Nancy Sparacino.

The following items will be on the agenda:

1. Review of the 2017 - 2018 budget.
2. Prepare the 2018 - 2019 Budget. Please consult with your committee as to your needs for next fiscal year. You may want to increase, keep the same, or decrease the amount of money in your annual budget.
3. Annual review of Chapter Investment Policy.

The following are the new suggested changes to the goals that were approved by the Assistance League of Hawaii  Board of Directors at our January 3, 2018 meeting.

Once again, our Hawaii Chapter will support National Assistance League's Legacy of Literacy Day with a special project. For several years now, the Tutu Tutorial program has sustained the library at Pu'uhale Elementary School. With the recent emergence of the new Kahauiki Village (housing previously homeless families) in the immediate area, there is an influx of new students to Pu'uhale School. Our project will provide augmented literacy services to these children with high needs. A large donation of books, with a focus on preschool and early education level children will mark Legacy of Literacy Day on February 24. You are invited to help this project grow by donating books or monetary funds at our next Regular Meeting on February 14, a special day for our members to show their generous hearts.

Project have been received and are packaged ready for delivery to the recipient groups: Castle Medical Center ER, Hospice Hawaii Pediatrics, Kapiolani Pediatrics, Legacy of Life Hawaii, St. Francis Hospice, Shriners Hospital, Wahiawa Hospital ER, and the Honolulu Fire Department. 

The bears will be delivered in early February. Any volunteers to help with the delivery please call Jane Winslow at 285-5603.

Pat Dixon has been busy with Hale Kipa Project (Teens Transitioning out of Foster Care) adding three new clients. She has purchased and delivered over $700 worth of items for the recipients including toaster ovens, vacuums, dish racks, mixing bowls, kitchen towels, sponges, brooms, throw rugs, glassware, and more.

I purchased $200 worth of supplies for the Shriners Hospital Project including coloring books, crayons, puzzles, hand games, Rubiks Cubes, small toys, etc (total of 34 items). The items were delivered to Shriners Hospital in January.

Mary Kay Junk purchased and delivered over $1,000 worth of items for the Youth Outreach Project. Included in the purchase were 100 one-way bus passes, shampoo, conditioner, men's and women's undergarments, bath and hand towels, backpacks, and diapers which were delivered in January.

Mary Kay Junk also heads up the Lullaby Layette Project. She has scheduled a layette packing party for January 29 at which she and her volunteer help will pack $2,500 worth of baby items into 240 packs for delivery to the hospital maternity wards.

We are wrapping up our t-shirt orders. Saturday, January 27 was the last Operation School Bell at Walmart in Kapolei. I will keep you posted on how everything is going soon.

The Thrift Shop has been very busy the past three weeks. Several people have volunteered upstairs and that makes it possible to get new items downstairs. Please continue to sign up to work downstairs. Nancy does a great job scheduling. Please let her know if you want to add your name to come in of if you have to cancel.
