Reminder: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period Basics

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is in full swing, and we hope the refresher below on what this means for your clients will be helpful.

2024 Open Enrollment Period dates: Jan. 1 – Mar. 31


Who can participate: Beneficiaries already enrolled in a MA plan as of January 1


What changes can be made:


  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, with or without drug coverage
  • Switch back to Original Medicare and, if needed, purchase a Medicare Part D plan

Open Enrollment Period Dos and Don’ts

The Medicare Advantage open enrollment period has certain marketing restrictions. Review the tips below to make sure you avoid unforced errors over the next several weeks. 

Dos


Focus on other enrollment opportunities, including:



  • Marketing to age-ins (who have not yet made an enrollment decision)

  • Dual-eligibles and LIS beneficiaries (who normally may make changes once per calendar quarter during the first 9 months of the year)


Send marketing materials when a beneficiary makes a proactive request


Meet one-on-one at the beneficiary’s request

Don'ts


Send unsolicited materials advertising the ability or opportunity to make an additional enrollment changes or referencing the OEP


Engage in or promote agent or broker activities that intend to target the OEP as an opportunity to make further sales


Call or otherwise contact former enrollees who have selected a new plan during the AEP


Specifically target beneficiaries who are in the OEP because they made a choice during Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) by purchasing mailing lists or other means of identifying them
