Madagh Blessing in Celebration of St. Sarkis Day
The preparation for Madagh has began with the blessing of the salt on Friday morning. Father Hrant and the Board of Trustees would like to invite you all to be present on Sunday, following the Divine Liturgy for the blessing of the Madagh which will take place in the Church Sanctuary, and be distributed to the faithful.
The Madagh has been lovingly prepared by the Ladies’ Guild members and volunteers.
We thank all parishioners who donated towards the Madagh.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO TIMOTHY (3:1-12)
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth-men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

Սա՛ եւս գիտցիր, թէ վերջին օրերուն դժուար ժամանակներ պիտի գան, որովհետեւ մարդիկ պիտի դառնան անձնասէր, դրամապաշտ, ամբարտաւան, հպարտ, հայհոյիչ, ծնողներուն անհնազանդ, ապերախտ, սրբութիւնները ոտնակոխող, տմարդի, անգութ, չարախօս, անհանդուրժող, դաժան, բարիին թշնամի, մատնիչ, անպատկառ, գոռոզ, եւ աւելի հեշտանքը սիրող՝ քան զԱստուած: Երեւութապէս աստուածապաշտ են անոնք, բայց խորքին մէջ չեն հաւատար աստուածպաշտութեան զօրութեան: Զգուշացի՛ր անոնցմէ: Անոնց մէջ կան նաեւ այնպիսիներ, որոնք տունէ տուն կը մտնեն եւ իրենցմով կը հրապուրեն մեղքերով ծանրաբեռնուած եւ զանազան ցանկութիւններէ բռնուած թեթեւաբարոյ կիները, որոնք միշտ կ’ուզեն գիտնալ, բայց երբեք ճշմարիտ գիտութեան չեն հասնիր: Այնպէս ինչպէս Եանէս եւԵամբրէս մոգերը Մովսէսի հակառակեցան, միտքով ապա-կանած եւ հաւատքով սնանկ այս մարդիկն ալ ճշմարտութեան կը հակառակին: Բայց իրենց յաջողութիւնը երկար չի տեւեր, որովհետեւ իրենց անմտութիւնը շուտով յայտնի պիտի ըլլայ բոլորին, ճիշդ ինչպէս այն երկուքինը եղաւ:
Բայց դուն կառչա՛ծ մնա իմ ուսուցումիս, կեանքի օրի-նակիս, յօժարութեանս, հաւատքիս, համբերատարութեանս, սիրոյս եւ յարատեւութեանս, որոնք ցուցաբերեցի՝ նոյնիսկ հալածանքներուս եւ չարչարանքներուս մէջ: Գիտես թէ ի՛նչ պատահեցաւ ինծի Անտիոքի, Իկոնիոնի եւ Լիստրայի մէջ. թէ ի՛նչպիսի հալածանքներ կրեցի, եւ այդ բոլորէն Տէրը զիս ազատեց: Նոյնպէս, բոլոր անոնք որոնք կ’ուզեն աստուածպաշտութեամբ Քրիստոս Յիսուսի միացած ապրիլ, անպայման հալածանքներու պիտի ենթարկուին:
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (6.22-38)
The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal." Then they said to him, "What must we do to perform the works of God?" Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Then Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." They said to him, "Sir, give us this bread always."
Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՅՈՎՀԱՆՆԷՍԻ (6.22-38)
Յաջորդ օր, ժողովուրդը՝ որ մնացած էր լիճին միւս կողմը, տեսաւ թէ հոն միայն մէկ նաւակ կար, որուն մէջ Յիսուսի աշակերտները մտան եւ առանձինն գացին. իսկ Յիսուս աշակերտներուն հետ նաւակ չմտաւ: Յետոյ Տիբերիայէն ուրիշ նաւակներ ալ եկան հոն, ուր Յիսուս Աստուծոյ գոհութիւն տալով բազմացուցած էր հացը եւ տուած ժողովուրդին, որպէսզի ուտեն: 24Ժողովուրդը տեսնելով թէ Յիսուս հոն չէր, ոչ ալ իր աշակերտները, նաւակները առին եւ Կափառնաում եկան Յիսուսը փնտռելու համար: Երբ զինք գտան լիճին միւս կողմը, հարցուցին.
– Վարդապե՛տ, ե՞րբ եկար հոս:
Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց.
– Կ’ըսեմ ձեզի, վստահաբար դուք զիս կը փնտռէք՝ ո՛չ թէ որովհետեւ հրաշքներ տեսաք, այլ որովհետեւ այդ հացէն կերաք եւ կշտացաք: Փոխանակ կորստական ուտելիքը փնտռելու, ջանացէք ապահովել այն կերակուրը որ յաւիտենական կեանքի մէջ կը մնայ: Այդ կերակուրը Մարդու Որդին պիտի տայ ձեզի, որովհետեւ Հայրն Աստուած իր հաւանութեան կնիքը դրաւ անոր վրայ:
Անոնք հարցուցին.
– Ի՞նչ ընենք, որ Աստուծոյ ուզածը կատարած ըլլանք:
Յիսուս անոնց պատասխանեց.
– Աստուծոյ ուզած գործը այն է, որ հաւատաք անոր՝ որ ինք ղրկեց:
Անոնք ըսին.
– Ի՞նչ հրաշք պիտի գործես, որպէսզի տեսնենք եւ քեզի հաւատանք. ի՞նչ պիտի ընես: Մեր հայրերը մանանան կերան անապատին մէջ, ինչպէս գրուած է. «Անոնց երկինքէն հաց տուաւ ուտելու համար»:
Յիսուս անոնց ըսաւ.
– Ճշմարտութիւնը կ’ըսեմ ձեզի, թէ ինչ որ Մովսէս ձեզի տուաւ՝ երկինքէն իջած հացը չէր: Հայրս է որ ձեզի կու տայ երկինքէն իջած ճշմարիտ հացը: Որովհետեւ Աստուծոյ տուած հացը ան է՝ որ երկինքէն կ’իջնէ եւ կեանք կու տայ աշխարհին:

Diarnentarach - Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Temple
A holiday that mixes our pagan past with our Christian present
In pagan times, February 14th, a cold winter day in Armenia, was marked by worshipping the sun and fire – surely, appropriately, to warm up.
Forty days after the birth of Christ on January 6th, he was presented to the temple on this day. As Armenia adopted Christianity as its official religion, this day became known as Diarentarach – Presentation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Temple. It has become customary in the Armenian Church for babies under the age of two to be presented to the altar for a special blessing on this day.
Following Divine Liturgy, the congregation proceeds outside the church where a pyre is lit aflame with a candle from the church. Hymns are sung and once the flames subside newlyweds leap over the fire in hopes of fertility and good fortune. Festivities and merrymaking follow and another holiday passes joyfully amongst families, friends, and community.

SAINT SARKIS THE WARRIOR
and
ARMENIAN VALENTINE
The commemoration of St. Sarkis the Warrior, his son Mardiros, and 14 faithful soldiers is a moveable feast in the Armenian church that can occur between January 11 and February 15. It follows the Fast of the Catechumens, which is not connected to St. Sarkis, but has become to be associated with this saint, even often referred to as the Fast of St. Sarkis.
Sarkis was a 4th century Roman soldier who became a Christian. He rose through the military ranks because of his valiant campaign on behalf of the Emperor Constantine. With the accession of Emperor Julian, Sarkis and his son took refuge in Armenia, where Christianity had already been adopted as the nation's official religion. Later, they went to Persia to join the Persian army in fighting Julian. Both fought with exceptional bravery. The Persian leader, Shapur II, tried to convince them to abandon their Christian faith and embrace Zoroastrianism. Both refused, and father and son were martyred. Fourteen loyal Christian soldiers who went to claim the bodies were also killed. Eventually, Christians secured the remains and sent them to Assyria where they remained until the fifth century when Mesrob Mashdots had the remains transferred to the city of Karpi in the area of Vaspurakan in Armenia. A monastery was built over the site of their graves.
The celebration of Sarkis the Commander’s Day is celebrated in Armenia not only by church rituals and prayers but also by folk customs and sacred tradition. St. Sarkis Commander is the imminent interceder of the youth. With his mediation miracles happen. On that day, the youth appeal to the saint to bring their prayers to God. On the night before Sarkis Day, young people eat a salty pancake before bedtime so that their future spouse is revealed to them in a dream and offer them water to quench their thirst. Another memorable habit of that day is to sprinkle flour outside the house and wait for the trail of the horse of Sarkis to appear. The trail of St. Sarkis’ horses’ hooves will bring them good fortune all year.

AYF Camp Haiastan has played a large role in many of our lives, both as young Armenians and AYF members. We are the current leaders of our younger generation, and we must ensure they are taught to never stop working towards our goal of a united,

The Armenian Genocide Education Committee (AGEC) of Michigan continues to pursue its mission to facilitate the teaching of the Armenian Genocide in Middle and High Schools across the state, as mandated by state legislation. Our goal is to eventually reach out to all school districts as well as private schools in the state to assist with teacher training and resources needed to teach about the Armenian Genocide in accordance with the requirements of the said law.
The AGEC is seeking volunteers among teachers, school administrators, superintendents, experts in professional development, and other interested individuals with the necessary enthusiasm and contacts to act as ambassadors to connect with districts, schools, and teachers across the state.
Our desire is to establish a network which will help the Committee
a) organize teacher training workshops on the Armenian Genocide, and
b) make teaching resources on this topic available to schools across the state.

ARS of Eastern USA Launches "Share the Love" Campaign for the Month of February
To celebrate the month of Love, the ARS of Eastern USA has launched its “Share the Love” Fundraising Campaign to collect donations in support of the “Hot Meal Program” for the Armenian communities of Lebanon and Syria.
Through the Hot Meal Program, volunteers at the Armenian Relief Cross of Lebanon (ARCL) and the Armenian Relief Cross of Syria (ARCS) prepare hot meals for community members who are struggling to put food on their tables. In Lebanon, the ARCL serves 800 meals to community members once a week, and in Syria, the ARCS provides 350 meals to community members, twice a week.
