Paving the Way for the Next Generation of TB Researchers: Jonathan Golub, PhD
Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology & International Health
“I’ve been informally talking to a lot of tuberculosis survivors from around the world to get a sense of what their needs are post-TB completion because I do think that’s a very forgotten aspect of TB,” Dr. Golub said. “It’s getting a lot of attention in the last several years from the perspective of post-TB lung disease, which is kind of what our TB PuRe study, and to some extent TB Aftermath, are about. We want to improve the health of people with TB so they can live productive, healthy lives following their battle with TB.”

Sunil Solomon, Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University spoke with India Today to explain that while there continues to be stigma and discrimination associated with HIV, it has improved considerably over the last two decades.
"One of the bigger challenges that persists is when people are diagnosed with HIV, they are unsure how their parents, siblings or society would perceive them," Solomon said. "PWIDs in India have a prevalence of HIV that is almost forty-five times higher than the general population. This population is at an elevated risk not only for HIV but also for hepatitis and other blood-borne infections."

What is Mpox and Why has WHO Declared it a Global Health Emergency?
Al Jazeera, Aug. 14, 2024
For the second time since 2022, mpox has been declared a global health emergency as the virus spreads across the African continent and risks entering other continents.
“There is a real attempt right now to mobilize resources and that is why in part WHO called for the public health emergency now,” Amita Gupta, director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and GKII faculty c0-chair told Al Jazeera. “There is not much international mobility in/out of the DRC so the risk of spread has been low. However, if the spread goes more widely in Africa then the risk of more global spread becomes a concern.”

Reading Glasses and Livelihood: Challenges and Pathways to Scale Access in India
The Nudge Institute, Aug. 1, 2024
This report highlights the importance of de-medicalizing eyeglasses and making them more accessible through non-medical channels by training local entrepreneurs and integrating vision care into broader health and development programs.
“To achieve scalable solutions, it is critical for policy interventions to streamline processes, incentivize community-level screening and distribution, and establish best practices for on-ground implementation,” Dr. Indu Bhushan, Founding CEO of Ayushman Bharat and GKII ambassador said. “The private sector must expand its reach with innovative and affordable solutions, while civil society organizations and philanthropic entities can fill service delivery and funding gaps.”
