Favorites from the men of Oakes Daylilies...just in time for Father's Day! |
Greetings!
I am the newest addition to the Oakes Daylilies family. I'm so new, I still catch my breath every time I see the gardens. Between you and me, I have a feeling I'll always get lightheaded when I see the gardens. Acres and acres of daylilies? Come on! If there's a better place to work I can't imagine where it is!
Maybe it's just me, but I have always found that writing about plants and flowers is just as fun as working around them. At Oakes Daylilies, I get to do both. The only hazard with this occupation is that my "favorites" list grows daily! Right now I'm head over heels for 'Milk Chocolate', 'Chicago Cherry', 'Frances Joiner', 'Holy Moses', and 'Corfu'.
With Father's Day just around the corner, I thought I'd use that as an excuse to get to know the co-owners of Oakes Daylilies, the father/son duo of Stewart and Ken Oakes, a bit better. These guys have been around daylilies their whole lives and I was curious to know what their favorites were. Some of their answers surprised me, some were sentimental, and some just made me laugh. You'll see...

Stewart's Five Favorites:
|
|
Stewart likes 'Pure and Simple' because every bloom is perfectly formed.
'Pure and Simple' is the color of orange sherbet. With petals that are slightly darker than sepals, and with wide, ruffled edges and an olive green throat, it is a striking daylily.
* 5 1/2" bloom, 28" tall, Early-Mid Season + rebloom, Semi-Evergreen |
|
The great, tropical, rosy pink color of 'Persian Market' makes it one of Stewart's favorites.
An excellent performer, 'Persian Market' produces lots of buds which will give you a long bloom season, plus rebloom! Gorgeous deep rose pink blooms with a deeper rose halo. Count on it for a great show in your garden. Fragrant.
* 7" bloom, 27" tall, Mid Season + rebloom, Evergreen |
|
'Orange Velvet' is a favorite of Stewart's because of its big round blooms and gorgeous color. The color is similar to 'Pure and Simple'.
A special flower in the garden - the big, full blooms of 'Orange Velvet' are a luscious orange color with veining and a faint midrib. Although it tends to fade in the sun, it goes from one pretty shade of orange to another. An Oakes family favorite.
6 1/2" bloom, 30" tall, Mid Season + rebloom, Semi-Evergreen
|
|
The big, soft, rosy pink double blooms of this daylily make 'Big Kiss' one of Stewart's top 5 favorites.
Big, fluffy blooms are a gorgeous blend of creamy light pink with a darker pink center.
5 1/2" bloom, 28" tall, Mid Season + rebloom, Dormant |
|
The tropical orange color of 'Frances Joiner' makes Stewart proclaim it as an all-time top favorite. 'Frances Joiner' is a gorgeous tropical blend of rose with a hint of gold and yellow mixed in for good measure. Unique in the garden. Fragrant.
5 1/2" bloom, 24" tall, Mid Season + rebloom, Dormant |
|
'Red Volunteer' is number one on Ken's list of favorites. 'Red Volunteer' was hybridized and introduced by his grandfather, Bill Oakes. In addition to sentimental reasons, Ken likes 'Red Volunteer' because of its abundance of well-shaped blooms and gorgeous color.
One of the favorites of our garden visitors and past customers. Its plentiful rich red blooms have a heavy substance and a smooth velvety texture. Selected as a Better Homes and Gardens Editor's Choice for March 2000 and An All American Daylily Selection in 2004.
* 7" bloom, 30" tall, Mid Season, Semi-Evergreen
|
|
The color combination of 'Back Draft' make it one of Ken's favorites. Bright orange red blooms with a vivid red eyezone. Really stands out in the garden - very eye-catching.
* 6" bloom, 27" tall, Mid-Late Season, Dormant |
|
The big, open, golden blooms of 'Dancing Lions' make this daylily a favorite of Ken's. The name is an added plus. He figures if he ever travels to Africa, this is the daylily he'll bring as a gift to a tribal chief!
An open, spidery bloom with a large chartreuse throat extending out onto buff yellow petals.
* 8" bloom, 28" tall, Early-Mid Season, Dormant |
|
Ken likes the color combination of 'El Desperado', and credits the unusual mustard and wine combination as the main reason it is a favorite.
Mustard yellow blooms with a wine purple eyezone.
*4 1/4" bloom, 28" tall, Late Season, Dormant
|
|
The bright red and yellow of 'Spider Man' make this daylily a top 5 favorite for Ken.
An impressive sight in the garden - big, robust blooms of rich red with a yellow throat. Makes a gorgeous display, a favorite of garden visitors.
* 7" bloom, 24" tall, Early-Mid Season + rebloom, Dormant |
