The Harvest Begins: Labor Day Weekend

View as Webpage

Dear Friends of Riley's Farm:

The Harvest: apple season begins, in earnest, around here on Labor Day weekend. We're picking Gala apples, LOTS of pears, raspberries, blackberries, and mulberries. Crop report here.

A word about pears: they are best enjoyed bag-ripened. This allow you to pick good hard fruit and ripen it in a brown bag to your liking. Mary makes a pioneer pear salad with dried cranberries that is just OUT OF THIS WORLD. This is a good time for you canners and bakers to stock up.

Pears and gala apples this weekend..

Labor Day Activities (Saturday and Monday)

U-Pick Fruit (Apples, Pears, Berries)

Complimentary Hay Rides

Live Music -- Saturday Only

English Fiddle in the Colonial Tavern

Classic Country in the Packing Shed -- "Whitewater Station"

Colonial Bakery and Packing Shed Barbecue (Steak, Ribs, Chicken)

The Big Band Dance -- Saturday Night

Tomahawk & Archery - Colonial

Big Band Again: Picture a cool mountain evening with the faint smell of orchard cider in the air. A bank of saxophones is warming up. A beautiful young couple strolls into the old packing shed, looking, for all the world, as though they were about to take to the dance floor in Casa Blanca. The band bursts in, and the Harmony Sisters give us the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B. A flag is unfurled and the crowd sings "God Bless America." It's 1946 in old Oak Glen. I EXPECT TO SEE YOU THERE...

Bring your wingtips and victory rolls,

James Riley
