A Note from Nort Johnson

Nort Johnson

President & CEO

It was a busy and productive 1st quarter of 2024 here at the Chamber office! Our first two big events are in the books with the Chamber Gala and the Downtown Flannel Formal. Both events were very well attended and feedback from the attendees was very positive. The coming events are in the planning stages now and we’re excited for our Annual Business Awards Luncheon on May Thursday, May 9th. Reserve seats soon as they are limited! Look for the information inside this newsletter.

Meanwhile, the newest event on our agenda is the Blue Collar Festival, formerly the Blue Collar Barbeque this event will feature a number of bands over the 2nd and 3rd of August at Tee Pee Tonka Park. This year’s band line-up is the best ever, and we’re expecting a nice crowd with food trucks, a vendor show, classic car roll-ins, and more. Look for the band announcements soon along with pre-sale information. Check the events calendar for up-to-date information on the Car Cruises, Golf-Outing, Taste of Faribault, and more.

Our Visionary Agenda includes some pretty big items that we’re working to improve workforce support. The Chamber and Chamber Trust have been working with the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation on a plan to create more daycare openings as well as a support system for existing providers. We have earned the support of our Washington legislators and are hoping to make an announcement soon!

In other news, the Faribault Chamber is representing Minnesota at the Pathways to Prosperity National Institute next week. We’ll be sharing the story of our work with South Central College and Faribault Public Schools in creating more pathways to success for our students. It’s quite an honor for staff, and a nice bit of PR for Faribault. We’re proud of our schools and the hard work being done to help our students find their paths to success.

Thank you so much for your support! We’ll keep working hard for the best outcomes for Faribault and for your businesses through community building, relationship building, convening leaders, building partnerships, and advocating for you at local and state levels. Have a great spring!

Critical Childcare Shortage

The Faribault Area Chamber of Commerce is making significant progress on its initiative to address the critical shortage of childcare in the community.

Local businesses are struggling to retain employees due to lack of childcare options, and Senator Klobuchar confirmed this is a widespread issue across Minnesota.

Casie Steeves leading tour with Senator Klobuchar

The Chamber is proposing a two-part solution at the former Faribault Town Square. The first part involves creating childcare pods, which are four separate spaces for small providers to operate independently. These providers would share a common outdoor space while adhering to regulations. The second part involves renovating an existing space to accommodate a larger daycare center with 3-4 classrooms.

To make this project a reality, the Chamber is actively seeking grants and other financial support. Senator Klobuchar suggested a public-private partnership model where businesses contribute to childcare expansion in exchange for guaranteed spots for their employees.

The Chamber is also looking to collaborate with potential childcare providers, particularly those with a center license interested in a secondary location. They welcome any suggestions or ideas from the community on how to best address this challenge.

An important policy hurdle was identified by Senator Klobuchar related to the federal food program for family childcare providers. Currently, providers operating outside their homes are excluded from the program, limiting their potential revenue. Senator Klobuchar expressed interest in advocating for a change to this policy, potentially allowing pod-based providers to participate.

With your support, this project can create a sustainable childcare solution that benefits Faribault families, businesses, and the overall economy. The Chamber will be scheduling a meeting with Senator Klobuchar's staff to discuss potential funding opportunities and will also be hosting a community forum to share detailed plans and solicit further input. Stay tuned for updates!

In the meantime, please contact Faribault Chamber Operations Director Casie Steeves if you have any questions or are interested in getting involved.
