Farewell from AfterCLASS

As fall begins, the sun sets on AfterCLASS. Our official last day as an organization under the umbrella of Tulane University will be September 30th. In January 2020, AfterCLASS began as a space for teachers with two lovely suites in the Taylor Education Center near downtown. We designed this beautiful space so that teachers could network, have access to plentiful resources, and feel just how important their profession is, a space with all of the amenities and style of other professional workspaces. Even better!

We started with several series of professional development, knowing that ongoing, context-based sessions are more impactful than one-offs. Many teachers joined us for our informative, interactive workshops, all designed and facilitated by other teachers. We enjoyed our new space for two months before we all had to shut down and work remotely. During the pandemic, teachers were called on to go above and beyond to help the world create some semblance of normalcy. Everyone quickly realized how dedicated, professional, and valuable teachers are. Through this unusual and difficult period, AfterCLASS eagerly morphed into different kinds of spaces for teachers. We held online support sessions, workshops, meet-ups, and book clubs. We also held safe-distance, open-air yoga sessions in City Park.

We resumed in-person meetings in 2021 with a stellar lineup, including our New Teachers Circle, Arts Camp for Teachers, Technology Integration, English Language Learners Series, Special Education Series, and so much more. We enjoyed hosting community partners for their events and sharing our space with teachers from all over Louisiana after they attended the Teacher Leader Summit. We also shared our space with experts who informed teachers about self-care, real estate opportunities, financial literacy, and so much more. We were truly a professional learning community and we sincerely thank all of our loyal members and community partners. We would also like to thank Phyllis M. Taylor, Kenneth Schwartz, Tulane's Taylor Center for Social Innovation and Design Thinking, and the AfterCLASS Advisory Board for their support.

Although we will not be incorporated as AfterCLASS, our executive team will take their expertise, experience, and enthusiasm to other endeavors of consultancy and teaching in our community. Read below for ways to keep in touch.

Have a lovely school year, teachers. You deserve it.
