Attendance Engagement Specialists making strides in reducing chronic absenteeism across MSCS

A multi-million dollar investment is helping to increase attendance rates at several Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS). Attendance Engagement Specialists or AESs are new support staff members hired by the District this school year to support 25 schools in need of an attendance boost. They have emerged as key players in combating chronic absenteeism and fostering positive change. Through targeted interventions and collaborative efforts with families, AESs are tackling the root causes of chronic absenteeism.

In the realm of basketball, Memphis boasts a rich tradition of competitive teams, and this year is no exception. Middle College HS (Division 1A), Douglass HS (Division 2A), and Ridgeway HS (Division 3A) all advanced to the 2024 championship.

Students can enjoy extra academic support along with fun and fellowship at dozens of schools across Memphis and Shelby County. High school students may participate in a nine-day intensive ACT prep workshop offered at two high schools.

Tennessee's literacy laws impact students in third grade and fourth grade.


Per state law, third-grade students who do not make a passing ELA TCAP score could be required to attend additional intervention or be retained, and impacted fourth-grade students who do not show adequate growth on the ELA portion of the TCAP could be retained with no additional intervention possible. The Whitehaven ES STEM Expo was a resounding success, with students buzzing with excitement and curiosity. Young minds were captivated by the interactive exhibits and hands-on activities that brought science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to life. The expo fostered an environment of discovery, igniting a passion for STEM subjects that will undoubtedly inspire these students to pursue their dreams and shape the future.

The MSCS Nutrition Services' Annual Food Show was a delightful event that celebrated healthy eating and culinary creativity. Students and families had an enjoyable experience sampling delicious and nutritious dishes crafted by talented school chefs. They learned about the importance of balanced meals and making smart food choices. Attendees participated in fun, interactive activities that promoted healthy habits.

NOTE FROM NUTRITION SERVICES: Nearly every industry, including MSCS, is experiencing food supply chain disruptions.


With our logistics providers openly communicating, the Nutrition Services Department has taken immediate measures to mitigate the impact.


A delay may affect menu selections and the availability of products/supplies. Please be patient and understanding as we work diligently to rectify this situation.
