A Word from the Pastor

June 7, 2024

I am pleased that we will once again host a production of Godspell in our parish church. This musical play has proven its worth as both entertainment and a catechetical tool. I remember attending the musical play for the first time in the early 1970s and have seen it many times since. I have used it in classes and on retreats with young people. It is one of my favorites.

The Church encourages the use of cultural heritage, including sacred drama, in a way that is in harmony with the Church's mission and can proclaim God's kingdom to all people. This includes using a language that is capable of reaching everyone, including contemporary music and drama.

At various times in the history of the Church, theater has been used to teach and entertain Christians. At certain points in history, we find morality plays, mystery plays, and dramatic performances of gospel passages. Even the custom of our Christmas creche comes from the live Nativity scene portrayed by St. Francis of Assisi.

One of the aspects of our production of Godspell that I find so edifying is that it invites young people to use their gifts and talents to give praise and worship to God. As they rehearse over and over again, the words taken from the gospel of Matthew find new meaning in them. They also build a sense of community with their fellow actors.

The director and producer of the play is Katie Gardner, one of our parish cantors. She approached me several months ago and asked if she could organize this production as a fundraiser for our parish. I am deeply grateful for her generosity. All profits from the productions goes to St. Patrick Parish. Many people in our parish have supported her and the cast to make this production a success.

There will be three performances: Wednesday, June 26; Thursday, June 27 and Friday, June 28; at 7:30 pm each evening in the church. [The Blessed Sacrament will be removed during the performances only.]

Buy your tickets for $15 in advance on the patio on Sunday mornings, at the parish office, or by contacting Katie directly through her email gardnerkatherine@hotmail.com

Any remaining tickets will be available at the door for $20. Buy early, save money.

See you there.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Novena of Masses for Fathers

In this month in which we celebrate Fathers’ Day, we have the tradition of offering a novena of Masses near Father’s Day for all fathers recommended to our prayers. There is an envelope in your packet of envelopes on which you can list names of fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, etc. Additional envelopes are at the doors of the church. Or you can simply use a plain white envelope and write the names on it. Put it in any collection this month. These envelopes will also be placed on the altar for the entire month of June. We lovingly and gratefully remember our fathers during this month.

Farewell to Fr. Frank

As you may have already heard, Msgr. Frank Pugliese is moving to Florida to be closer to his family. Fr. Frank has been helping St. Patrick Parish since 1990. He offers Mass in English and Spanish, assists with confessions and other sacraments, and in recent years has served as chaplain of our school (without pay!). He will be greatly missed.

Fr. Frank’s last weekend with us before he makes the final move to Florida is June 16. If you would like to have an opportunity to thank him and say goodbye to Fr. Frank, we will have a reception for him in the parish hall on June 16 after the 11:00 am Mass and again after the 1:00 pm Spanish Mass (which Fr. Frank will celebrate).

Please stop by for even a few minutes to wish him well and thank this generous priest for serving our parish so faithfully for many years.

An Organ Piece for Pedals Only

Many pianists struggle with playing the organ because it involves not only both of your hands but your feet as well. J.S. Bach wrote a challenging piece that dares organists to demonstrate how adept they are with the pedals of a pipe organ.

Pedal Exercitium, BWV 598 is masterfully played by Anne-Isabelle de Parcevaux as recorded during the rehearsal of a concert on the April 28,2024 at Saint Martin Church, Dudelange (Luxembourg).

Euthanasia Poisons a

Nation's Soul

On June 12, 2024, Dr. Phil Goscienski, a pediatrician with 37 years of experience , will present a compelling discussion of the current trend of expanding eligibility for euthanasia far beyond terminal illnesses, affecting even children with non-fatal diseases. Laws allowing euthanasia, or "mercy killing”, have been passed and are proposed in many states. A discussion of Catholic teaching on euthanasia, and the future of this controversial issue is included.

The event will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in the Parish Center Lower Level, 1450 South Melrose Drive in Oceanside at 7:00 PM. Registration is required as seating is limited to the first 100 attendees. Please call (760) 758-4100, ext. 192, or email koc11439@stmoside.org indicating the number of attendees in your group. The presentation will be recorded and may be accessed online at https://stmoside.org/euthanasia-presentation/

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year B

First Reading

Genesis 3:9–15

Adam and Eve eat the fruit of the forbidden tree.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 130:1–2,3–4,5–6,7–8 (7bc)

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

Second Reading

2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1

We believe and so we speak.

Gospel Reading

Mark 3:20–35

Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me.

Background on the Gospel Reading

In the section of the Gospel just before these verses, Jesus calls his Twelve Apostles. Now he performs his first exorcism. It is told within the context of conflict with his family.

A crowd so large has gathered that Jesus and his disciples are not even able to eat their bread. His family comes to take him away because they think he is beside himself. And the scribes think he is possessed by the devil. Jesus points out to them the absurdity of their thinking that he uses the devil to cast out demons. In fact, it is Jesus who ties up the strong man, Beelzebub, and overcomes him.

He concludes with a brief saying about the forgiveness of sins. All sin can be forgiven except for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It’s not known exactly what he means by this. It could be that the only sin that can’t be forgiven is the one that cuts you off from the source of forgiveness, the Holy Spirit.

Mark then brings Jesus’ family back into the picture. They are not presented in a critical light but are just trying to see him. This gives Jesus the opportunity to point out that family for him is not based on blood.

Our next Family Mass will be this Sunday, June 9 at 9:00 am. Please join us and bring the whole family.
