Family Giving Is a
Family Legacy
By Kathleen H. Anderson, President and Executive Director
History has shown that philanthropy is an essential part of the legacy of great business leaders. Look, for example, at the businesses founded over a hundred years ago in steel and oil as well as the technology giants and global enterprises of today. Great leaders and their employees recognize their moral and ethical obligations to help the less fortunate by supporting charitable works in education, healthcare, and social services. In the case of CCF-LA, we add the overarching dimension of faith as a critical component of philanthropy.
In addition to teaching philanthropy in their businesses, these leaders make special efforts to encourage their own families to learn by example. Many have set up family foundations to encourage family meetings and a broader understanding of what it means to influence their values through charitable giving.
With changes and reforms in tax laws, the creation of the Donor-Advised Fund has in many cases replaced the family foundation. Today, a Donor-Advised Fund allows for more time for families to discuss the gifting process because the administrative work of filing tax returns, conducting audits, holding meetings with minutes, and managing investments moves over to the DAF provider.
CCF-LA’s DAF program for families encourages family gatherings to focus on the values that drive their grant making, provides for a proactive approach to calculations and the timing of making grants, and especially helps families connect their generations with their values in determining the impact of their charitable giving.
At CCF-LA, we have established a Charitable Family Office that supports a family’s giving legacy through multiple funds, including the DAF, to ensure multigenerational support.
