Congratulations to Ben Franklin Elementary Music Teacher Corynn Nordstrom for earning the Excellence in Music Teaching Award from Civic Music Milwaukee! A portion of the write-up for the award states, "For the past 20 years, Corynn Nordstrom has taught music for children in pre-kindergarten through high school. She is grateful to be in her 6th year teaching general music for students in kindergarten through 2nd Grade at Benjamin Franklin Elementary. Mrs. Nordstrom also enjoyed directing the Milwaukee Children’s Choir Introductory Choir for the past five seasons and is currently teaching the MCC Music Explorers program for children ages 4-5. She also teaches summer beginning woodwind lessons for area middle school band programs and vocal directs for Musical Masquers, Inc. youth musical theater camps." I fondly remember stepping into Mrs. Nordstrom’s classroom before the new year, where she welcomed my singing along with her students, Feliz Navidad. The award will be presented before a Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concert at the Bradley Symphony Center in March. Mrs. Nordstrom expressed in an email that she was humbled primarily because of how many outstanding music educators she works with within the School District of Menomonee Falls.

Congratulations to 35 students who participated in the School District of Menomonee Falls 40th Spelling Bee. Congratulations to the finalists advancing to the Regional Spelling Bee on February 13th.

AGENDA

DISCUSSION:

Creation of Fund 46: Capital Projects Funds, as designated by Wisconsin State Statute and outlined in the Wisconsin Uniform Financial Accounting Requirements (WUFAR), are fund accounts for financial resources that are restricted, committee, or assigned to expenditure for capital outlays, including the acquisition or construction of capital facilities and other capital assets. The Capital Projects Fund being recommended for the School District of Menomonee Falls is Fund 46, a Long-Term Capital Improvement Trust Fund.

Fund 46 is funded via a transfer of dollars from the General Fund (Fund 10) to Fund 46.

The benefits of establishing a Long-Term Capital Improvement Trust Fund, or Fund 46, are:

  • An end-of-fiscal-year opportunity to reallocate funds to expend the Fund 10 budget more fully
  • The ability to set aside funds in a separate account for capital projects
  • Leveling out of shared cost increases for larger capital outlay for equalization aid purposes by making smaller transfers from Fund 10.

A school board with an approved long-term capital improvement plan (minimum of 10 years) may establish a "trust" funded with a general fund transfer. The contribution from Fund 10 to Fund 46 (Long-term Capital Improvement Trust Fund) is recorded as the expenditure for shared cost and equalization aid purposes. Future expenditures from Fund 46 are not part of shared costs. A school board is prohibited from removing money deposited into Fund 46 for five years after the fund is created. After the initial five-year wait period, funds may only be used for the purposes identified in the approved long-term capital improvement plan. Fund 46 assets may not be transferred to any other school district fund.

ACTION:

MFHS has a new student group called Women of Will. Founded in 2018, Women of Will (WOW) is an exclusive women's high school sports sponsorship powered by BSN SPORTS and Under Armour® that exists to empower female student-athletes on their journey towards achieving greatness on the field as well as conquering mental, physical, and societal obstacles. MFHS is one of only five schools in Wisconsin to have this prestigious program. To raise awareness of the group, we are selling Under Armour apparel. The store will close Wednesday, January 31, at midnight. Items will be delivered about five weeks after that.

Thank you for your support of women’s high school sports!
