Benefits of Dormant Oils
Throughout the year we have all tried our best at controlling and containing problematic pests. But did you know those pests are looking for a vacation winter home? Insects overwinter by finding a warm place. Bugs will enter homes, sheds, mulch, leaves or soil to protect themselves from the cold temperatures. Thankfully, you can help protect your home and trees with dormant oils (also known as horticultural oils.) An application of dormant oil will help control overwintering insect populations by coating the insects' spiracles (respiratory opening) effectively smothering future larvae. Additionally, some fungal diseases like powdery mildew can be controlled. Overall, dormant oils are a great line of defense.
It is not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN"
The Colorado Department of Agriculture has tested and confirmed emerald ash borer in Broomfield. Since 2013, Boulder, Gunberrel, Longmont, Lafayette, Lyons & Superior have been in quarantine to help slow the spread of EAB. This helps neighboring communities prepare and plan for EAB arrival. Now we bet you're asking "What is my plan?" or "How do I prepare my Ash?" Well, we're glad you asked. Contact us to evaluate your Ash tree. From there we can help you budget for an EAB treatment plan or set up a removal and replanting of other tree species. EAB has been devastating and costly. It's heartbreaking but we must prepare and save our trees.

Did You Know?
Trees obtain water best when it is allowed to soak into the soil slowly to a depth of 12 inches. Monitor weather conditions and water during extended dry periods without rain or snow cover. Contact us for deep root watering.
Re-mulching flower & shrub beds as well as tree rings is recommended now. This will help with moisture retention.There should never be more than 2-3 inches of mulch at once.
You can hire landscapers through the winter. If you call in the spring you may be out of luck. Get your landscaping needs scheduled early. Contact us for landscaping referrals.
The debris underneath your fruit trees can allow disease to spread and reinfect your plants over winter. Sanitize under fruit trees by raking leaves and removing fallen plant material to help protect your trees.
