Florida's Junior Jamboree

Have you heard of the famous Junior Jamboree organized by Kim Roy in Florida?! The Junior Jamboree is described as a juniors tournament, clinic and sleepover party that many junior players in Florida look forward to twice a year (summer and winter). And due to events such as this, junior racquetball in Florida continues to show signs of growth every year.

Known as "Miss Kim", to all the Florida junior players, Kim Roy has a strong passion for racquetball and encouraging young players to become involved in the sport. Kim Roy said that "the Junior Jamboree is a great way for beginners to become involved in the sport as there are beginner clinics available and each event we attract new kids that are trying racquetball for the very first time ever."

Racquetball is known for improving a person's skills at other sports.

This game is a great way to help develop hand eye coordination, footwork, cardio and other development stages in a child's life.  Any sport a child may play; racquetball only helps them improve their performance.  Many professional athletes are playing racquetball for the cardio, speed, and reflexes needed to excel at their level.

Kim holds a Junior Jamboree twice a year.  This event is a sleepover where the kids get to learn racquetball, improve their skills, and understand the fundamentals of the game. And they compete in a tournament. There is a beginner division for new players. At the end of the night they get to enjoy a movie, play in a small ping pong tournament and enjoy the company of other juniors from around the state.  This is the type of event that creates many long term bonding relationships amongst kids.

The juniors really love the end of the event awards and prize ceremony where medals are given for each division and each kid gets to pick a prize to bring home. Prizes were donated by Lawler Sports, HEAD/Penn, Gearbox, and Kim Roy. They also got the chance to see what tournament experience was like as there was a small tournament held Saturday night and Sunday morning before the event ended at noon.

As afirst timecoach at the event, I got to experience how much energy and excitement all the kids bring to this fun event.  The boys got to sleep on one court while the girls slept in another.  Some were away from Mom and Dad for the first time and didn't show any signs of wanting to go home nor scared to be away for the night.

The kids enjoyed themselves so much many were asking if there could be another Junior Jamboree the following week!!  I think Miss Kim will need a few days off after this all-night event, though!! But I heard that the very next day she was back to coaching as she was still in the middle of summer and Junior Racquetball Camps all day during the weeks!! Very impressive to see Kim Roy's commitment to junior racquetball.

What were some of the kids saying about the Junior Jamboree after it was over?

"I like so much sleeping on the courts, playing against all the other kids....and of course winning!"  Max Grauer (13 years old)

"When is the next jamboree?" and  "It's awesome and fun" Zachary Noyes (10 years old)

"It's fun and you learn a lot and I really, really want to go again".  Owen Noyes (7 years old)

"Jamboree rocks!" Jordan Cooperrider

"It's great to see all my friends that go to Jamboree every year.  Some tournaments overlook the kids.  This one is all about the kids.  Miss Kim always makes it fun." Evan Wargo

"In most tournaments, I always have to play the older boys.  This tournament is great.  There are always a bunch of girls my age to play and hang out with.  Plus, Miss Kim always has great prizes after the tournament for everybody to win." Graciana Wargo

Kim Roy is very attentive to the kids and everything going on around her.  She sets the rules at the beginning of the event and the kids are very respectful to her as well as to one another.

Want to get involved?! There will be another Junior Jamboree this upcoming February 2011 and if you would like to get your junior player signed up you can contact Kim Roy  at Kimberly_Roy@hotmail.com.

World Firefighters Association
TWFRA, USAR, and more

The World Firefighter Racquetball Association (WFRA) hopes that everyone had a safe and fun summer.

This summer has not only been a monumental one but also an eventful one for the WFRA. As of this summer, the WFRA and USAR have come to an agreement.

With the support of the USAR, the WFRA will continue to grow nationally, and will be able to be featured in not only locally sanctioned events, but we are working together to get national events to form divisions for Firefighters. As we work together, the WFRA will continue to support the USAR by bringing new members to them, and the USAR will support the WFRA through a commitment of excellence. The WFRA looks forward to a long standing relationship with the USAR for years to come.

In April, the WFRA was the lead sponsor of the 2010 Florida State Firefighter Games Racquetball Tournament held in Hillsborough County, Florida. Held at the Harbor Island Athletic Club, 25 firefighters from across the United States came in and played the tournament. This event brings out the best in all of the competitors and it was one of the best tournaments, as most of these firefighters have decided to recruit others from there department to play. This year was the first time that there were 18 different departments represented and of those 18 departments, 10 were new. This was an important step for the establishment of the WFRA in the State of Florida.

Racquet for the Cure in Tampa

Celebrate the Women in Your Life

Racquet for the Cure Racquetball Tournament

by Kim Roy

Harbour Island Athletic Club (Tampa, FL) and Tournament Director Kim Roy recently hosted the Celebrate the Women in Your Life Racquet for the Cure Racquetball Tournament on September 17-19. And for me, this tournament had a special meaning. Last year, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very emotional and scary year in our family. And my views on life, friends and family changed very drastically. I know many of you have been faced with the same situation know and can relate. I continue to pray each day for my mom and others fighting against breast cancer. And hope that someday we can find a cure.

Thank you to everyone that supported this event. The tournament attracted 67 participates from all over Florida and as well as two out of state participants (Arlynn Abramson from Vermont; and Manny Rodriguez from Indiana). Arlynn left Florida with 2 medals (1st in Womens B doubles with Magella Kirby; and 2nd in Mixed B doubles with Chris Adamo). And Manny left Florida with 2 medals (2nd in Mixed 35+ with Kim Roy; and 2nd in Mens Open/A Doubles with Quentin Mieure). Great job to our out-of-state guests!!! Please come back and visit again soon!!

Definitely a HUGE thank you to Wilson. Wilson was the major sponsor for this event. Thank you Chris Evon for making this happen each year.  Other product sponsors for the silent auction were from Lawler Sports, Kim Roy, Ken Hooley, Glenn Carlson, Don Luehm, and HEAD/Penn. Also huge thank you for the baked goods that also helped to raise money for the event. Baked goods were donated from Renee Fish, Vanessa Smith, Magella Kirby, Yvonne Buffington, Bobbie Woodruff, Meredith Tenouri and Doug Chase. Thank you VERY much!!

Grow the Game

Players Helping Pros

Have you ever seen professional racquetball?

The men and women of professional racquetball are so exciting to watch!  It's a phenomenal experience!

I've seen so many pro level matches in my 17 years since I started playing.  It doesn't get old for me.  The saga on the Men's tour continues with "will anyone beat Kane Waselenchuk?"  Kane went undefeated in match play last season while only losing 3 games.

We are hosting the Lawler Sports IRT Pro Am.  This is a Tier 1 Men's IRT Pro Stop in Terre Haute, IN January 20-23, 2011.

This is not just an ordinary racquetball tournament.  This is a special event that promises to help grow the sport of racquetball.

This tournament began in September 2009 and the fans responded very well and it has helped motivate us to keep it going.  Our efforts throughout the year are solely to grow the sport by introducing new people to the game and to help pro racquetball increase their prize money.

We bring this event together for the fans and racquetball world.

This is a time when racquetball players can sit around, socialize, rekindle the friendships that began so many years ago, and have the best workout imaginable then stuffing their face should they choose to....all while watching the best racquetball in the world.

This event is our time to give to the sport and letting the professional racquetball players entertain us till we are blue in the face.  Help us bring the fans what they all want to see.  It's professional racquetball at its finest.

We ask you for help.  You see, this tournament is a tournament for the players by the players.  The pro game is so exciting and the fans absolutely love it.  To get the pro's here and to have a successful event our budget says we need a total of $30,000.

In an effort to raise the funds we need many sponsors as well as donations to our event.

There are some fantastic sponsorship opportunities available including commercials on irtnetwork.com:
