Welcome to the Fall Season! In this newsletter, we will be continuing our exploration of the Seasons from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective focusing on the fabulous Fall Season. In our last newsletter, we learned how in the Late Summer Season the Spleen and Stomach Organs and Meridians were all about what we feed our mind, body, and spirit (food, water, emotions, people, media, etc) and how this “food” can nourish us or sometimes make us sick (the Twisties). Feeding ourselves in healthy ways can help us restore balance and health to our lives. This Fall Season is all about the Lung and Large Intestine Organs and Meridians. These organs and meridians are all about what we absorb and take into our bodies and what we release. Physically, the Lungs and Large Intestines have huge surface areas which allow the Lungs to take in oxygen and release the waste product of carbon dioxide, and the Large Intestines to absorb nutrients and water while releasing what we don’t need through our bowel movements. Emotionally it’s about taking in what inspires us and letting go of what no longer serves us – in with the good, out with the bad. For this newsletter, Dr. Calista Stafford, DOM, will take you deeper into these two organ systems and share more about how TCM practitioners treat their patients on all levels to restore balance. She will also share how the very simple but powerful act of conscious breathing can affect our well-being and how mushrooms can impact our health. As always, we also offer time-tested and simple products that can be used at home between your acupuncture treatments to help with staying healthy this season. We look forward to hearing from you! In the meantime, stay Inspired and Let Go!!! Peace & Love

Looking at Metal Element with a Holistic Mind
by Dr. Calista Stafford, DOM
My Intention with this article is to allow the interested reader a look into the mind of an acupuncturist and maybe share a little of what is happening in treatment. We are entering into autumn, the time of the Metal Element or Phase in Chinese Medicine. The meridians (body highways or rivers) that pair up as Metal are Lung and Large Intestine. It’s interesting, the two organs if looking at them loosely, both look like a horseshoe. They resonate together – taking in the good and letting go of the bad...

The Power of Breath by Dr. Calista Stafford, DOM
One bit of homework I give out most to people has to do with breathing. As I say, no one will know you are doing anything unusual. It can shift how you feel, reduce stress and pain. Deep belly breathing lets the body know it can go into the parasympathetic system and life is safe. I have been at the doctor’s office, and I will focus on deep slow breathing...

Comment on Fantastic Fungi by Dr. Calista Stafford, DOM
Netflix recently added a documentary ‘Fantastic Fungi’ about the wonders of mushrooms. I highly recommend watching this movie and feel the 80 minutes would be time well spent.
The documentary delves into the history of the mysterious Fungi Kingdom. While there are millions of
fungi that make up this Kingdom, there are a little over 20,000 known species of mushrooms....

Acupuncture is just one part of a broad system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which includes Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui Na (Chinese Massage), Therapeutic Movement (including Tai Chi and Qi Gong), Meditation, Chinese Dietary Therapy, and Feng Shui (geomancy). These are all taken into consideration when the acupuncturist develops a unique treatment plan that is right for you.

Cream of mushroom soup. Unlike that condensed soup from a can, this from-scratch recipe has leeks, garlic, and a pound of wild mushrooms, along with coconut milk, which gives it its creaminess. It’s rich, filling, and (believe it or not) healthy.

Adjust Your Sails
How to Embrace Exercising in Cooler Weather
"The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails," says American writer William Arthur Ward. The cooler winds of autumn are here. The sun is setting sooner and stealing our sunlight. Mother Nature is transforming the colors around us and the smell of change is in the air.
Change can be good and with the brisk weather upon us, changing your outside workout routine may be necessary. Here are a few tweaks as we try to embrace the cooler season.
Warm-up and stretch: Colder temperatures mean tighter muscles so don’t forget to stretch before your activity. Just a few minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks can get the blood flowing to your muscles which can keep you more limber and less prone to injury. Stretch a bit afterward, too.
Stay hydrated: You may not be sweating like it’s mid-July, but you still need to keep your body hydrated. Drinking plenty of water keeps your muscles pliable, eliminates toxins, improved brain function, and much more.
Dress in layers: If you are exercising in the chilly outdoors, dress in a thin layer of clothing so overheating won’t happen. Wearing clothing made of moisture-wicking material will help your body stay dry while you sweat.
Fewer Daylight Hours: Exercising outside in the evening may be challenging because of earlier sunsets, so try a midday workout. Walking during your lunch break or raking leaves between Zoom calls may be a good option to keep your body moving…and yes, yard work is exercise. If you are exercising outside after dark, make sure that you are visible to traffic by wearing reflective clothing and using a flashlight.
Change can be good. Small adjustments to your workouts can make you more comfortable, help you stick with your plan and may keep you from getting bored. Happy Autumn!
