Dear members of the MTL community,
The new academic year has started with lots of exciting news and updates from our MTL community. I hope you had a chance to rest during the summer, because the academic year that has just started is going to be really busy as the entire community works together to set the foundations for the microelectronics of the next few decades.
We have just learned that Prof. Moungi Bawendi, professor of Chemistry at MIT and MTL member, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots." Please join me in congratulating him for this outstanding and well-deserved honor. His commitment to excellence and collaboration is a continuous inspiration to all of us at MTL.
Lots of great events and seminars are happening this semester! We were happy to host the first MTL UROP Fair on September 7th - we had a great turnout of undergraduates interested in learning more about microelectronics and many of them have joined MTL this term to get into this amazing field. Thank you to the groups who came and presented their work, and to the ones currently hosting these amazing students.
Our next big event was the MIT Deep Tech Career Fair which connected companies from MTL, MIT.nano, CQE and the AI Hardware Program with more than 200 undergraduate and graduate students. It was a terrific event where MIT students had a chance to learn first-hand about all the job and internship opportunities available for them in microelectronics and semiconductors. It was great to see many of you there!

The 2023 Fall MTL Seminar Series lineup is set, and we are looking forward to lots of great talks this semester. You can find the complete lineup of speakers below. There are a few special seminars happening this semester too, be sure to keep an eye out! Dr. Jinseong Heo, Vice President of Technology and the Semiconductor Material Theme Leader of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) gave a talk on "Disruptive Material Research for the Next Generation Semiconductors at SAIT" on September 19th and TSMC Founder Morris Chang will be coming to MIT as part of the Manufacturing@MIT Distinguished Speaker Series on October 24th.
We are excited to share with you the 2023 Microsystem Annual Research Report! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year's report. The report summarizes this year’s progress on more than 100 different research projects on all areas of micro- and nanotechnology, from advanced semiconductor materials, new devices, integrated photonics, and circuits, to insect-scale micro robots, biomedical systems, and AI hardware accelerators, among many others. You can view it here.
Another big piece of news is that our region has been chosen as one of the eight Microelectronics Commons Hubs recently awarded by the US Department of Defense to enhance lab to fab transition of microelectronics technologies. As many of you know, MTL has been very involved in writing the original proposal for this Hub, and we are looking forward to playing a key role in strengthening our entire region through MTL's commitment to excellence in research, teaching and entrepreneurship. A very first initiative MTL is leading under this program is the Northeast Microelectronics Summer Internship Program (NMIP), which we started a couple of years ago to connect freshman and sophomore students with summer internships in microelectronics. You can find all the information about the program here, but the bottom line is that, if you are a student, you have until October 20th to apply for an internship like no other. If you are a company looking for students, please reach out to Preetha Kingsview at preethak@mit.edu as soon as possible.
Please read below for even more announcements - MTL faculty and student spotlights, highlights on the latest research happening in our community and upcoming events you'll want to add to your fall calendars! As always, please reach out if you have news you'd like to share or publish, we are always happy to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Tomás Palacios

The EECS and MTL Communities experienced a sad loss with the passing of Professor Judy Hoyt. Judy was a pioneer in the development of one of the semiconductor manufacturing technologies that underlie all of modern electronics. She was a key contributor in the running of the Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) where she served as Associate Director from 2005 to 2018. All of us at MIT who knew Judy will remember her as a gentle soul and a caring friend. A reception in Judy’s honor will be announced later.
