AFI News ~ Fall 2017

Invest in Good.  Local.  Food.

Rolling Roadshow - Funding our Foodshed
comes to Burnet on Thursday Oct 5th, 2017

Are you "investor-ready"? What does it mean to be "investor-ready?" Is there funding available for small food companies beyond the bank, or friends and family, or maxing out the credit card?

Throughout 2017 AFI is hosting a series of events to help sustainable food entrepreneurs better understand the funding and lending landscape. Our first events in Austin, Fredericksburg, Lockhart, and Georgetown were big successes, and we're looking forward to taking the show to Burnet.  The event is free and open to all local sustainable ag and food companies considering raising capital - even if that possibility is far in the future - as well as to Technical Assistance Providers that help entrepreneurs.

Austin ~ Fredericksburg ~ Lockhart ~ Georgetown  ~ Burnet ~ Rockdale

Special Thanks to our Roadshow Partners:   USDA/FSA, Capital Farm Credit, NCAT (The National Center for Appropriate Technology), Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, CAPCOG (Capital Area Council of Governments), SCORE Austin, and Texas Center for Local Food.

Portfolio News...
Farmhouse Delivery Funded

Farmhouse Delivery delivers local sustainable food from the farm to your house.  Just like the name says! AFI made a loan as part of a larger raise orchestrated by the company to fund moving into a very cool new warehouse and distribution facility.
Cold Spring Farm Funded

Cold Spring Farm is a CSA and Farmers' Market producer east of the Fort Worth area. They had the opportunity to buy a set of hoop houses and get reimbursed by the Farm Service Agency of USDA, but needed the cash up front to make it work.  We were happy to oblige!
Traverse Journeys Funded

Traverse Journeys  is an impact-focused travel outfitter providing transformative experiences across the globe that foster cross-cultural appreciation, environmental awareness and sustainable tourism. Check out their  Amazon Encounter EcuadorYoga & Surf Nicaragua, & Cycle Southeast Asia trips coming up.

[But wait, you say, that's not a food or ag company!  You're right, b ut it is founded and run by Ashley Blake, who successfully ran and sold Bona Dea Gluten-Free (an AFI portfolio company), and we're happy to support her again!]
Austin Gelato Funded

We worked with Austin Gelato for a loooong time, helping with business planning, and sourcing, and general encouragement. When it came time to raise money, we all realized the best approach was to go through Kiva USA, which turned into a huge success.
Cook's Nook Opens for Business

AFI provided construction financing for Austin's first culinary incubator, The Cook's Nook, which opened in May. Congrats Joi and team!
Cat Spring Yaupon Tea Wins Awards

Abianne and JennaDee of Cat Spring Yaupon have had a good 2017.  First they won the  Southern Living Magazine Entrepreneur of the Year, then they won $180k (!!!) at the WeWork Creator Awards.  Have you had this yet?  Wow.  Awesome.  Find it at HEB & Central Market.
"La Texana" Adds Some Heat

Bola Frozen Pizza continues to grow rapidly, fueled by new flavors including La Texana, who's house-made chorizo with chipotle adobo adds heat to the organic tomato sauce, mozzarella, red onions, and poblano. Man, that's making me hungry just typing it!
Skinourishment Introduces Polyn Line

Skinourishment, the Wimberly-based producer of 100% plant-based, organic, edible quality skin care products, has introduced a wonderful new line of face and body washes, serums, masks, and more called Polyn.

AFI's Curt particularly likes the Regenerative Face Serum after shaving!

AFI Happy Hour October 25

Save the date - Weds Oct 25 around 5 pm - for another AFI happy hour. Like the previous ones, we'll feature no speakers, no presentations, no cover, no agenda. In fact this time we'll even discourage "networking". Let's just hang out and drink beer!  Place: TBD. Suggestions?
AFI Co-Founder Jarred Maxwell Featured Contributor in the Slow Money Journal

" Sometimes, I wonder if this is what it felt like for folks working at NASA in the 60's. They wanted to get to the moon, but no one had ever done anything like it before...  I see Slow Money in a similar light - except working in the opposite direction, of course - toward the earth, the soil...

Let's Connect in SF or Boulder

AFI is hitting the road in October, attending SOCAP17 (" the world's leading conference on activating the power of capital markets to drive positive social and environmental impact") in San Francisco and SOIL2017 ("People are waking up to the importance of soil") in Boulder. If you'll be at either, let's connect!
We're # 1! We're # 1!

The Austin Business Journal recently published their list of top regional Angel Investing groups and AFI topped the list.

Which is hilarious of course because the good folks at CTAN are way bigger. A close inspection shows the list is alpha sort! But hey, #1 is #1!
Around the EcoSystem...
From Conventional Finance to Regenerative Investing

AFI Friend Marco Vangelisti does the absolute best webinars and seminars on how an individual - you and me - can become a values-based investor in social good. Check out his TedTalk, at right, or better yet attend the live workshop Oct 15 in Boulder.
Texas Farmers & Ranchers Need Your Help

Harvey may have passed from the news cycle, but it's effects are all too lingering to our friends and neighbors the producers.  Please consider donating to disaster relief for farmers and ranchers, headed up by the Texas Center for Local Food, and hosted at Barnraiser.
Woody's New Book

Slow Money Founder (and AFI friend) Woody Tasch will release his new book, SOIL2017 which starts "I'm sad as hell and I'm not going to fake it anymore" at the SOIL conference Oct 16, but here's a tasty snippet to get us thinking, and moving...
