This Weekend in Worship
The scripture reading from James tells us to stop showing favoritism in the assembly, treating the rich visitor with more honor than the poor one. Jesus himself seems to show partiality in his interaction with the Syrophoenician woman in the gospel. Everyone who brings a need to Jesus is received with equal honor as a child and heir.
Scripture Readings for Sunday

About the draft social statement: How should Lutherans understand their relationship to civic life — including government — as individuals and as a church? After three years of study a task force has posted a draft social statement on civic life and faith. Between now and Sept. 30 you are invited to study the draft and provide feedback by filling out a survey. That statement is available in English and Spanish. Faithful Connections
September 22
New this year! Faithful Connections is a time for caregivers--parents, guardians, grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents, etc.--to come together for intentional conversation about forming the faith of young ones today. Please join us Sunday mornings at 9:30 in the Luther Room for discussion questions, guest speakers, prayer, resource sharing, and general support. It has been said that there are no such thing as other people's children and as followers of Jesus we are not meant to do life alone. So, this is an opportunity to take 45 minutes a week and connect with other adults.

How to Have Crucial Conversations
September 22
Adult Faith Formation on Sunday mornings kicks off a series of sessions regarding crucial conversations around tough topics. As a church we confess that God is deeply involved in our lives and world, but figuring out how and what that means in relation to the specific issues and questions we face is often difficult. People in a faith community seem reluctant to talk together about such questions, especially if this will open up real differences among them. These sessions will serve as a guide that points out some important things to remember in leading faith-based conversations about social issues.

Calling All Musicians
All musicians, young and young-at-heart, experienced or inexperienced, are cordially invited to participate in Faith’s Music Ministries.
The Chancel Choir is a vocal ensemble for adults. The choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm and sings approximately three times a month at Sunday morning services and other special events during the year. All are welcome, even if you can't make every rehearsal or Sunday. This is a perfect place to get started in music ministry.
The Jubilate Bell Choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:00. The bell choir plays in worship approximately once a month. Whether you’ve played bells or not - you are welcome to ring!
Youth Music 7th-12th graders are invited to share their musical gifts in worship and special events throughout the year. Projects will be prepared and shared with those who are interested. Please click this link to tell us more about your musical gifts and how you’d like to be involved.
Kid’s Music is a musical group for 1st-6th graders. The group meets on Wednesdays from 6:00-6:30. The group will explore music through singing, but also through motion and instruments. The kids will share their music at Sunday worship approximately once a month.
Special Music. If you’re an adult and have a musical gift that you’d like to share in worship or a special event, that isn’t being shared through our regular ensembles, please let us know. All are welcome!
If you have any questions or would like to learn more please reach out to Zach Rohlwing, Director of Music Ministry at music@faithlc.org.

Worship Coordinators
Worship Coordinators provide an essential function on Sunday mornings at Faith. The coordinator arrives 15 minutes prior to worship, consults the white binder to make sure worship helpers have arrived, and makes sure communion servers know where to stand. Currently, anyone can sign up to be a Worship Coordinator under the Worship Helpers link or at faithlc.org/worship.
Beginning in October, Worship Coordinators will be scheduled each month to ensure we have this position filled. If you are interested in learning more about this role, contact Jan Kirk in the church office (jankirk@faithlc.org or 515-225-8334), one of the pastors, or fill out a Time and Talent Form. Training will be provided periodically.

Passing the Plate
Beginning this weekend, there will be a slight alteration in how worshipers physically give of their financial offering during worship. While there will still be a time to reflect on our response to God’s good news made known in Christ during the order of worship, the ushers will no longer be passing offering plates. Rather, people are encouraged to place their gifts in an offering box, located near the center entrance of the sanctuary, before or after worship. A musical offering will remain while the table is set for Holy Communion and the congregation is invited to reflect on their gifts of time, talents and financial offering.
Why this change? Due to the growing trend of online giving and gifts mailed to the church office, there has been a significant decrease of offerings placed in the plate. This has become awkward and distracting for worshippers as a near empty plate is passed through the pews.
Questions or feedback can be directed to Pastor Eric Carlson (eric@faithlc.org) or Ann Drummond, Council President (council@faithlc.org).
