Contact Devin if you need childcare

The Newton Teachers' Strike is continuing on Monday, January 22nd, and there will be no school that day. As a community, we can offer what we can and open our hearts to those in our community who truly need it. Please read below to learn how you can get childcare or volunteer to help.

Volunteer to Provide Childcare

Parents and Guardians: Childcare during Teachers' Strike

I am working to make arrangements for those of you managing many logistics as you navigate parenting and working during the Newton Public Schools teachers’ strike. I have started to recruit volunteers to provide childcare and I have set up this SignUpGenius so that we can fill up time slots as a pre-emptive measure.

Just so you know: with each time slot, volunteers can identify whether or not they would like to provide childcare at FUUSN or if they would like to provide more individualized care for a family in a family's home. If they choose the latter, their name, number, and availability will be added to a list for parents to work with them directly based on their specific needs.

You will notice that I am setting up four slots each day:

7:30 AM to 10:30 AM

10:30 AM to 1:30 PM

1:30 PM to 4:30 PM

4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

I have told potential volunteers that each night at 7:30 PM, parents are notified of whether or not school is canceled the next day. There is a parent designated to notify me soon thereafter. Potential volunteers understand that we do not know how long this will last and once I receive notification about the next day they can expect to hear from me by 8:00 PM letting them know if the strike is continuing and that childcare is needed the next day.

On your end, you can expect to find out no later than 8:00 PM whether or not we will be offering childcare at FUUSN and at what times the next day. You must RSVP for your child(ren) to participate in the childcare taking place at FUUSN by emailing me directly.

Volunteers: Request for Support of our FUUSN Families

Newton Public School teachers are on strike and that means school is not in session. Parents are managing many logistics as they navigate parenting and working during the teachers’ strike. To support our FUUSN Families, we need folks to help with childcare because resources in the larger Newton community are being exhausted, and we have the space available to offer activities led by you and our older youth. Might you volunteer your time during the week?

Use this link to sign up for time slots each day. Please note that we do not know how long the teachers' strike will last, and things are uncertain. I have set up the SignUp Genius so that we can fill up time slots as a pre-emptive measure. You will notice that I am setting up four slots each day:

If it does continue, you can expect an email and text message notifying you that childcare is needed the next day.

Covid Policy Reminder

Your Ops Council continues to monitor the Covid wastewater levels and public health recommendations. As cases rise with a new variant again, and we also are seeing increases in hospitalizations due to RSV and flu, we are encouraged by the fact that our current practices and recommendations align with current public health guidance. We especially encourage anyone eligible to be up to date on Covid boosters!

As a reminder, here are our guidelines for FUUSN gatherings:

  1. Stay home if you feel unwell and definitely if you have tested positive for a communicable illness.
  2. Wear a mask if you feel well but may have been exposed.
  3. Remember that the last few rows of pews in the sanctuary are reserved for folks masking due to increased vulnerability to illness, and respect that space appropriately.
