NORFOLK – Starting as early as Monday, July 19, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement nightly, full closures of Newtown Road at the I-264 interchange to set bridge girders.
The closures of both northbound and southbound Newtown Road are scheduled for July 19-22 and will begin as early as 7 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning. Northbound Newtown Road will be closed just north of Greenwich Road, and southbound Newtown Road will be closed just south of Center Drive.
While the closures are in place, a signed detour will direct motorists to utilize Center Drive and Kempsville Road before re-accessing Newtown Road. Single-lane closures in both directions of Newtown Road will be in place leading up to the directional closures. Also during this time, left turns will be restricted from the I-264 off-ramp onto Newtown Road (exit 15).
Multi-lane closures will be in place in both directions of I-264 between Newtown Road (exit 15) and Witchduck Road (exit 16) in conjunction with this bridge work, starting as early as 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
Crews are widening the I-264 bridge over Newtown Road, as part of extension of the existing collector-distributor road, from Newtown Road (exit 15) to Witchduck Road (exit 16).
This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
