THE URGE TO PURGE

When you think of the word purge, it often means to get rid of things, whether it is sin, old habits, or old junk in your life. As I was meditating this morning I heard the words, “Urge to Purge.” You see, one must have the urge, or the desire to purge out the stuff that needs to be removed.

In Psalm 51 there is an example of being purged. David had sinned with Bathsheba which resulted not only in her getting pregnant by committing adultery, but David had Uriah, her husband, put on the front line of battle which caused Uriah’s death.

Psalm 51 is such a wonderful example of purging or repentance. In verse 7 it says, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”  The word purge here is the Hebrew word chata’ which means to bear the blame, cleanse, purify, and make reconciliation. Hyssop is a shrub, a mint, which is used as an antiseptic. David was using this statement to tell the Lord that he wanted to be cleansed of his sin. He did not blame anyone for what happened but himself. He had the “urge” to “purge.” He did not want to carry the weight of his actions anymore.

Are there things in your life that you know that you need to be purged of? Then, like David, ask God to purge you of them. He is always willing to cleanse us with his blood when we confess to Him our sin. He is not an evil Father. He is a loving Father that wants us to live a holy life. When we come to him and purge ourselves of our sin they are gone forever, never to be remembered anymore.

He will not demand that you do it. He wants you to do as David in Psalm 51 says, “For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.”  This was David’s repentance.  David did not want to stay in that condition. He wanted a new fresh start with the Lord and received it. You can receive it also by having the “urge to purge!”
