The NEFEC Literacy Initiative is an in-depth approach to improving reading for low-performing students. The Initiative kicks off this summer with four-day institutes that focus on professional development for teachers and administrators in the areas of building vocabulary and academic language, text complexity, fluency and stamina with complex text, standards aligned writing, text meaning across content areas, and small group instruction.
Over 500 teachers from schools in Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Flagler, Putnam, Suwannee, and Union Counties are scheduled to attend. The first Institute was held June 24-27 at Matanzas High School in Flagler County, the second occurred July 22-25 at Trenton High School in Gilchrist County, and the third is July 29-August 1 at Columbia High School in Columbia County.
Gilchrist County School District Superintendent Rob Rankin praises this program saying, “We are pleased to host the NEFEC Literacy Initiative institute here in Gilchrist County. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to focus on literacy skills and setting high expectations for all students. We are grateful for all the groups which came together to make this happen.”
The Foundation for Rural Education Excellence in partnership with the North East Florida Educational Consortium (NEFEC) was awarded a $50,000
Dollar General Literacy Foundation
Grant to support the NEFEC Literacy Initiative and summer institutes.
