New! Renovation Begins on a Building that will Become the Fort Pierce Highwaymen Museum

Renovation work began Tuesday, July 9th on a building that will become the Fort Pierce Highwaymen Museum.

The project is being overseen by the City of Fort Pierce, in collaboration with the Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency (FPRA) and the Original Florida Hall of Fame Highwaymen. They are planning a ceremony at 10:30 AM on the same day, just before the renovation begins, to mark the start of the project.

The building that is being transformed to eventually house the Highwaymen Museum is currently the historic Jackie L. Caynon, Sr. building located at 1234 Avenue D. It was named in honor of the late Jackie L. Caynon, Sr., the first African American elected official in St. Lucie County and a distinguished five-term Fort Pierce City Commissioner.

New! City Dedicates Park in Honor of 91-year-old Community Advocate

The Winter Garden City Commission, at its Thursday, June 27, meeting, approved a resolution officially dedicating the city-owned park at 1203 E. Plant St. as the Charlie Mae Wilder Park, named after 91-year-old community advocate Charlie Mae Wilder.

Wilder has lived in the east Winter Garden community since 1976. She is one of the neighborhood’s biggest advocates, and she has memberships in multiple organizations and boards designed to promote and improve the community.

“The resolution expresses a tribute to honor a remarkable resident of Winter Garden with a steadfast, life-long track record of public service and community development,” Economic Development Director Marc Hutchinson said. “Ms. Charlie Mae Wilder has served, and continues to serve, many organizations in various capacities in both Winter Garden and Central Florida, including as a former Winter Garden commissioner and is a current board member of the Winter Garden CRA. She is a respected pillar with a unifying voice for both the Historic East Winter Garden Neighborhood and the entire Winter Garden community.”

Artists Named For Fort Myers' Innovation Walk

The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), in partnership with the Edison Awards, have selected four creative visionaries and their proposals to create engaging, transformational art installations to be built along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River in downtown Fort Myers.

The goal of Innovation Walk is to marry art with innovation, transforming and populating a meandering, mile-long waterfront park pathway with enduring installations and experiences that intrigue curiosity and celebrate human creativity. Innovation Walk builds upon the legacy of imaginative invention in Lee County – think Thomas Edison and Hendry Ford – and melds the past with future-forward thinkers.

The area’s median salary is $57k and change. The future owners of 26 single-family Habitat homes coming to the area will make less than that, but they’ll still be on a pathway to home ownership.

The CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, Becky Lucas, was in attendance when the board voted unanimously. She reiterated the city-approved floor plans she presented in their proposal for a previous, ongoing project off of Prospect Avenue.
