Honoring Our Bowfin Crew: Alf Weidner

Alpheus “Alf” Weidner served as a Motor Machinist on the USS Bowfin (SS-287) during War Patrols 8 and 9. He passed away on June 11, 2018, at the age of 93.

A true "Mighty Mine Dodger," Weidner bravely navigated the treacherous waters of the Sea of Japan during World War II. Before joining the submarine service, he was initially assigned to aircraft maintenance on Treasure Island. Uncertain about this placement, he eagerly awaited reassignment. His wish was granted when he was transferred to Pearl Harbor, where his previous submarine knowledge became invaluable. Gaining experience on the USS Kingfish (SS-234) and USS Seadragon (SS-194), Weidner ultimately found his calling as a motor machinist aboard the USS Bowfin (SS-287).

To discover the driving force behind Weidner's decision to become a submariner, watch his full interview by clicking the video above.
