CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S BRIEFING

Hello Everyone,

As we look ahead to the rest of the year, I am confident that we will continue to positively impact the lives of our patients and the community we serve. It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through 2024! This second quarter has been a whirlwind of activity at FOCOS Hospital, and I am so proud of all that we have accomplished together.

In this issue of our newsletter, you will read about the inspiring stories of Agnes and Angela, two young girls whose lives have been transformed by the care they received at FOCOS. You will also learn about our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of care we provide, as well as our commitment to education and outreach, including our successful Scoliosis Awareness Month campaign and our fundraising efforts for a new rehabilitation center. One of the highlights of this quarter was the visit of our partners from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. Their expertise and insights have been invaluable as we continue our journey to achieving JCI accreditation.

Rehabilitation is an effective complement to medical and surgical interventions and also minimizes the disabling effects of chronic health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Physical therapy is almost always imperative after spinal and reconstructive joint replacement surgery as it contributes to reducing pain, promotes walking, and expedites the healing of tissues around the area where surgery was performed. With an increase of over 300% in patients passing through the gates of FOCOS over the last 10 years, our old rehabilitation unit is unable to contain the numbers that wish to patronize the services of our experienced rehabilitation specialists. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to join us in raising funds for this project - Be sure to read about how to do this in the newsletter.

As we look ahead to the rest of the year, I am confident that we will continue to positively impact the lives of our patients and the community we serve. Thank you for your continued support of FOCOS Hospital.

Sincerely,

Irene A. Wulff. FWACS, FGCS

HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY (HSS) VISIT TO FOCOS HOSPITAL

We're delighted to share a heartwarming tale of connection and collaboration. A two-person team from the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) spent two days on April 16 – 17, 2024 at FOCOS to assess specific identified areas of focus within the Hospital operations. HSS and FOCOS have a formal affiliation whereby HSS supports the goals of FOCOS to provide high-quality orthopaedic care and improve the quality of life in Ghana and neighboring countries. Together we promote these goals through joint efforts in patient care and academic initiatives. The HSS team included Tracy Willett, Assistant Vice President, Perioperative Services & Charles Fisher, Vice President, Rehabilitation and Performance

This visit was scheduled to assess the current management and operational capacity in the areas of Rehabilitation Services and Quality Management. Areas observed included Physiotherapy, Operating Room, Central Sterile Processing, PACU/ICU, Urgent Care, Radiology, Pharmacy, Wards, Clinics, Administration, Cafeteria, and Warehouse.

Their visit commenced with a warm reception from our CEO, Dr. Irene A. Wulff, and key personnel. After a brief meeting, they delved into a comprehensive assessment of our Quality unit to ensure that we meet the highest standards of excellence and safety. Charles immersed himself in our rehabilitation unit, witnessing patients' determination to regain mobility and strength under the care of dedicated therapists. He identified areas for growth and engaged in insightful discussions with our therapists. Meanwhile, Tracy observed a surgical procedure and explored our Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), gaining a deeper understanding of our processes.

They also visited our Supply Chain unit, engaging in discussions on logistics and identifying our hospital's needs. Their dedication to understanding our operations and brainstorming ways to improve processes was truly inspiring.

Throughout their interactions with various departments, the value of collaboration shone through, emphasizing the importance of working together towards a common goal. We're grateful for the visit and look forward to continued partnership and growth!

DEPARTMENTAL HIGHLIGHT - PHARMACY

FOCOS Pharmacy is committed to providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care tailored to the needs of inpatients, outpatients, and walk-in clients. By working closely and communicating effectively with other healthcare providers, we ensure that our patients receive the highest standard of care.

The department is staffed by four dedicated professionals: two registered pharmacists, including the pharmacy head, and two registered pharmacy technicians. Through their coordinated efforts, they deliver exceptional pharmaceutical care to meet all patient needs within the facility.

We operate daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, Monday through Sunday, and are available for emergency needs outside of regular hours.

Our responsibilities include the selection, procurement, preparation, compounding, labeling, and dispensing of all medications, making us a vital component of the healthcare team.

In critical care, our role is crucial. We not only provide medications promptly during emergencies but also develop and manage medication therapy programs that enhance patient outcomes by minimizing adverse events.

For chronic conditions, our thorough assessment of therapeutic needs and creation of patient-specific management plans contribute to delivering cost-effective, high-quality healthcare.

In summary, our goal is to safeguard health, prevent disease, and ensure that drug therapies are both safe and effective.

SCOLIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH

In honor of Scoliosis Awareness Month, we kicked off a campaign to educate and screen students for scoliosis in Pantang, Adenta, and Oyarifa throughout June. Teaming up with Shield School, Tickles and Giggles, KAF School, Light Academy, and Gracefield Academy, we offered free screenings and education on Fridays.

Our goal with this initiative was to increase awareness on the significance of early detection and treatment of scoliosis. We are happy to share that students who were identified received referrals to FOCOS for additional evaluation with the consent of their parent/guardian. We are thankful for the schools' support and collaboration, and we are excited about the chance to positively influence the health and wellness of our community.

In all, we were able to screen over a thousand students from these schools. The support and cooperation of the schools have been invaluable.

Together, we can make a positive impact on the health and well-being of those in our community.

AGNES TRIUMPH: FROM PAIN TO POSSIBLITY

Agnes, a 16-year-old student at Ghanaian Child School in Ofankor, had dreams as vibrant as the fabrics she adored. Hailing from Apam in the Central Region of Ghana, she aspired to become a fashion designer, fueled by her passion for clothing and textiles.

However, her aspirations were overshadowed by a debilitating condition that struck her at a young age. Six years ago, she began experiencing excruciating back pain, which made it impossible for her to sit for long periods or walk extended distances. In search of relief, Agnes embarked on a medical journey that took her from Asofan Hospital to Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, and finally to FOCOS for specialized care.

At FOCOS, Agnes was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), a condition that required surgical intervention. Just when hope seemed elusive, a ray of light pierced through the darkness. During the annual fundraising GALA 2023 organized by FOCOS USA, donors who learned of Agnes's plight extended a helping hand. With her surgery fully funded, Agnes underwent the procedure on March 5, 2024. The surgery was not just a success, but a testament to her resilience and determination.

Under the vigilant care of the medical team, nursing staff, dieticians, and other support staff, Agnes responded remarkably well to treatment. With renewed vigor, she returned to school, ready to tackle her final year examinations.

Agnes's family, overwhelmed with gratitude, expresses their heartfelt thanks to the donors of FOCOS USA GALA 2023 and the entire FOCOS team.

Thank You For Helping Agnes ''StandTall'!

Angela's Journey: From Challenge to Triumph

Angela's story began with an extraordinary set of challenges. Born in TanoBoase, within the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana, this five-year-old faced obstacles from her very first breath. Complications during her birth, including a breech position, led to a Cesarean section. Doctors discovered a protrusion at the base of her spine, causing immense concern for her family.

Despite these early challenges, Angela's resilience shone through. Raised by her grandmother, she fought to overcome the physical limitations imposed by her condition. As she grew, the protrusion at the base of her spine gradually diminished, offering a glimmer of hope. Yet, her struggle to crawl and walk independently persisted.

Angela's family sought help from various hospitals, but solutions remained elusive. It wasn't until a referral to FOCOS by the Wenchi Government Hospital that a beacon of hope emerged. At FOCOS, Angela was diagnosed with a spinal deformity, and the path to recovery became clear, albeit daunting due to the financial burden of the necessary surgery.

Amidst these challenges, a miracle happened. The Miss Ghana Foundation stepped in, covering Angela's medical bills and paving the way for her surgery. On January 24th, 2024, Angela underwent a successful operation, marking the beginning of her transformative journey.

The medical, nursing, and physiotherapy teams at FOCOS watched in awe as Angela responded positively to treatment. Her spirit and determination shone brightly, and it became clear that she was on the path to a brighter future, including the opportunity to start school.

Angela's mother, filled with gratitude, expressed heartfelt thanks to the Miss Ghana Foundation and the entire FOCOS team. Inspired by her daughter's miraculous transformation, she has become an ambassador for FOCOS, spreading the message of hope and healing to others.

Angela's journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of compassionate support. From a challenging beginning, she has emerged triumphant, proving that even in the darkest times, there is always a glimmer of hope.

LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT

A well-managed lifestyle plays a crucial role in preventing and managing diseases, and it can significantly enhance outcomes in chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, strokes, and heart disease, which are major causes of mortality.

Research indicates that adhering to the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—when properly assessed and implemented—can even reverse the progression of chronic conditions, including cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases.

The "DREAMS" acronym provides an easy way to remember these six pillars:

  • Diet: Whole-food, plant-based nutrition
  • Relationships: Social connection
  • Exercise: Physical activity
  • Avoid: Avoidance of risky substances
  • Mental wellbeing: Stress management
  • Sleep: Restorative sleep

Diet and Nutrition

Consuming whole, plant-based foods rich in fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients is beneficial for heart health. Aim for a diverse selection of minimally processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Relationships

Maintaining healthy social connections positively impacts physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Leveraging positive relationships and social networks can support and reinforce healthy behaviors.

Physical Activity

Engaging in regular physical activity helps counteract the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Adults should incorporate both general physical activity and specific exercise routines into their weekly schedule for overall health and resilience.

Avoidance of Risky Substances

Avoiding tobacco, excessive alcohol, and certain recreational drugs is crucial, as their use increases the risk of chronic diseases and mortality. Overcoming risky habits often requires time, different strategies, and support.

Mental Wellbeing

Stress management is key. While stress can enhance productivity and health when managed well, poor handling of stress can lead to mood disorders, weight gain, immune dysfunction, and other issues. Identifying negative stress responses and developing effective coping strategies are essential for improved well-being.

Restorative Sleep

Adequate sleep (7-8 hours per night) is vital for optimal health. Poor sleep patterns can lead to reduced attention span, mood disturbances, increased hunger, insulin resistance, and diminished performance. Good sleep ensures rejuvenation and revitalization.

Remember to "DREAM well" to stay healthy.
