Message from the President
Larry Slater, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, FAAN
Spring is finally here! As we experience many phenomenal weather changes, including the northern lights visible as far south as my home state of Mississippi, we celebrate new beginnings. In the next month, nursing students across the nation will take part in commencement ceremonies honoring their achievement of successfully completing their nursing curriculum. Congratulations to all of you! The nursing profession eagerly expects all of you to pass the NCLEX-RN licensing exam and embark on your career as registered nurses.
While we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024, there are those students who will begin nursing internships, take summer courses, participate in a mission trip, or enjoy a well-deserved summer break. Whatever your plans, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on one of my spring highlights, and hopefully yours – NSNA’s 72nd Annual Convention – Elevate: Dreams Help Make the Impossible Possible, which took place in April in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Upon receiving the scholarship as a second-degree nursing student, I had already navigated through numerous challenges in my academic journey. Juggling a demanding work schedule of 3-4 days a week alongside intensive coursework had been a significant hurdle. The scholarship I received significantly alleviated my financial burden, enabling me to focus more on my studies during subsequent semesters. Additionally, this recognition further fueled my determination to excel and make a substantial impact in my community through my diverse extracurricular engagements. I was immensely motivated by this opportunity and fully committed to utilizing it to contribute meaningfully to the nursing profession and positively influence my community.
I am currently immersed in the dynamic environment of the intensive care unit at a regional hospital south of the Twin Cities area. This is the very unit where I undertook my nursing internship, fostering an incredible continuity in my learning journey. Each day unfolds with a tapestry of new knowledge, enlightening "ah-hah" moments, and invaluable connections that encapsulate the essence of this noble profession. This ongoing journey of growth and discovery fills me with excitement and anticipation for the future within the healthcare system.

As the patients needing care exceeds the number of nurses, funding is urgently needed to allow nursing students graduate on time and enter the nursing workforce.
The shortage impacts not only the lives of nursing students nationwide, but also the quality of care patients receive. Please help us ensure that nurses will be there when you need them, by sponsoring a scholarship today.
