Message from the President

Larry Slater, PhD, RN-BC, CNE, FAAN

Spring is finally here! As we experience many phenomenal weather changes, including the northern lights visible as far south as my home state of Mississippi, we celebrate new beginnings. In the next month, nursing students across the nation will take part in commencement ceremonies honoring their achievement of successfully completing their nursing curriculum. Congratulations to all of you! The nursing profession eagerly expects all of you to pass the NCLEX-RN licensing exam and embark on your career as registered nurses.

While we celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024, there are those students who will begin nursing internships, take summer courses, participate in a mission trip, or enjoy a well-deserved summer break. Whatever your plans, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on one of my spring highlights, and hopefully yours – NSNA’s 72nd Annual Convention – Elevate: Dreams Help Make the Impossible Possible, which took place in April in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

This scholarship has provided a sense of financial relief and burden. My tuition is quite expensive and a struggle to pay every month. This is a blessing and pushes me to continually accomplish my goal of becoming a BSN nurse. This scholarship has really showed me that I am on the right path and deserving of becoming an amazing nurse. I can use this scholarship as a part of my testimony throughout my journey. I am so grateful and will continually strive even harder towards my dream career. Thank you to my scholarship sponsor for choosing me. I am sincerely grateful and the best of my career life as a BSN nurse is coming.

Congratulations April!

This scholarship will allow me to pay for my college tuition rather than choosing to pay with additional student loans. I am grateful to receive this award since this has reduced my stress levels significantly. I work approximately 20-30 hours every weekend to put money towards my student loans as well as save up for the next semester. By being awarded this scholarship, I now have the opportunity to work less hours and to devote more of my time to my studies of nursing and psychology.

Congratulations Jade!

National Council of State Boards of Nursing Scholarship

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) established an endowment in 2011 supporting the Forever Nursing Campaign. NCSBN's generosity impacts nursing students across the country needing financial assistance to reduce the burden of rising tuition costs. Scholarship funding totaling $108,500 was awarded to 46 deserving scholars. Thank you NCSBN for supporting the future of the nursing profession and making dreams of becoming a nurse a reality!

I am a very hardworking single mom of two amazing daughters. Sometimes it really feels like us against the world, but I am fighting for a better life for all of us, by striving to achieve a career in nursing. I love nursing school. I love the brilliant, passionate team of instructors at UNLV. I love the simulation center filled with resources to train us and help us hone our skills. I recognize that such a high quality education is a privilege, and I understand why the tuition is high, but it is a huge barrier for someone like me. I have the grades, and I do the work, but I can't always keep up with the costs. Scholarships like this one allow me to press forward towards my goals, every day closer to becoming the nurse I aspire to be; one who reflects the incredible spirit of wisdom and empathy that is at the heart of our instruction at UNLV. Thank you for allowing me to focus on my studies, by relieving some of the burden of my tuition. This gift not only impacts me and my future, but also directly impacts the kind of life I will be able to provide to my daughters, who are truly counting on me, 100%. I'm beyond grateful for this opportunity to keep pursuing my dream, and to show them what we can achieve when we give it our all.

Congratulations Katherine!

Tina Filoromo Scholarship

Tina Filoromo, RN served as Trustee from 2014-2020 and as Vice President of the FNSNA Board of Trustees. To leave an enduring legacy, she established the Tina Filoromo Scholarship Endowment for nursing students who are experiencing unusual circumstances, such as caring for elderly parents or sick children.

Funding is provided to ease the financial burden of nursing students whose circumstances prevent them from working or getting involved in their communities. The FNSNA is grateful to Ms. Filoromo for her service and for meeting the needs of this vulnerable population.

Upon receiving the scholarship as a second-degree nursing student, I had already navigated through numerous challenges in my academic journey. Juggling a demanding work schedule of 3-4 days a week alongside intensive coursework had been a significant hurdle. The scholarship I received significantly alleviated my financial burden, enabling me to focus more on my studies during subsequent semesters. Additionally, this recognition further fueled my determination to excel and make a substantial impact in my community through my diverse extracurricular engagements. I was immensely motivated by this opportunity and fully committed to utilizing it to contribute meaningfully to the nursing profession and positively influence my community.

I am currently immersed in the dynamic environment of the intensive care unit at a regional hospital south of the Twin Cities area. This is the very unit where I undertook my nursing internship, fostering an incredible continuity in my learning journey. Each day unfolds with a tapestry of new knowledge, enlightening "ah-hah" moments, and invaluable connections that encapsulate the essence of this noble profession. This ongoing journey of growth and discovery fills me with excitement and anticipation for the future within the healthcare system.
