Bullies Don't Run In Our PACK!

FMS Anti-Bullying Campaign

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT CYBERBULLYING

  • Know your friends. When you're using a social networking site, it's tempting to "friend" as many people as possible. After all, the more "friends" you have, the more popular you are, right? WRONG. In reality, few people know hundreds of individuals well enough to call them friends. Would you let a stranger view photos of you, read your inner thoughts, and know where you go to school? When you friend someone you don't know, that's what you've done. Be smart online. Only "friend" people you know and trust in real life.

  • Protect your accounts. Never share log-in information or passwords for your electronic accounts.  This includes e-mail, instant message services, social networking sites, and online video games.  In the wrong hands, these details can be used to access your private conversations, steal your identity, commit crimes, and cause great harm.  If you suspect that someone other than a trusted parent or guardian knows your password, change it immediately.  If necessary, contact the service provider to suspend your stolen account.

  • Use privacy settings. Most social networking sites allow you to control what others can see of your profile.  Research your settings and configure them so that only people who are your friends can view your profile.  This will prevent strangers or potential bullies from seeing what you want only your friends to see.  In addition, these settings can stop others from posting on your page.

  • Keep private information private. Avoid posting revealing personal information, photographs, inner thoughts, or intimate details about your home life or loved ones on the Internet.  Despite privacy settings, it is possible that some of what you put online will be seen by people who are not your friends.  And once this material gets on the Internet, it can exist there for a long time - even after you delete it from your local computer.  To protect yourself, imagine that everything you put online will be seen by your worst enemy.  If what you are about to post is something you wouldn't want your enemy to read, don't put it on the Internet.
